No Power - Resistor/Capacitor Help Can't Post

Hello All,

I have a Magnavox Rear Projection 51mp6100d_37. The unit has been working fine until the other day when I went to power the unit on. I turned the set on and the green light on the power button lit up. 5 seconds later I hear a click then it goes to 2 flashing lights. I open the rear of the unit and started to look for any blown resistors/capacitors.

I found the one #2304 blown/burnt on the board. When I turned the power after 5 seconds I believe what I hear is the power relay switch clicking off. When I look at #2304 I can see some burn marks. I pulled it out and one side of the prongs is burnt.

I took it to Radio Shack to see if they had a replacement but the guys there had no clue. I can't see the part online. It's a small unit and needed a magnifying glass to read the number but it reads top to bottom:
FR
391K
1KV
52

If I can find this is this something I can replace and solder back in to fix? Any idea on where I could find this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

JTS, Thanks for taking the time to look at my issue. I tried to Google the part you listed but I can't find the exact part or where exactly to purchase it. Do you have a link or store suggestion on where I can get one?

Re: [oldschool99] No Power - Resistor/Capacitor Help [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi JTS,

I received the part and installed it. That was not the part that was defective. It's the one above it. Please see photos below. I pulled it but there is no part number on it. Can you tell by looking at it what the part number might be and if Digi-Key carries it? (What their part number is)

Any help would be much appreciated.

From your photos, it looks like it might be a ferrite bead/fixed inductor (coil) or if has a band on one end, a diode.

Re: [oldschool99] No Power - Resistor/Capacitor Help [In reply to] Can't Post

Is there anyway to narrow which ferrite bead it might be?

On the Digi Key site there is about 3,500 but I don't know how to narrow it down.

I tried the magnavox site but can't tell which one it might be by their part numbers:

oldschool99;.....

I had no luck finding a manual for your TV...
That said...
On the label where you got the model number should be a chassis number...
Please post that number...
On the board where you got the "ferrite" bead should be a 4 digit number.....
Please post that number...
I think that the "ferrite" bead may be something else....
Ferrite beads rarely cause problems....
You may have a serious problem here....
Post those numbers & I'll see what I can do for you.....

THANKS.....Sly.....

BTW:...
The encompassparts link did not work for me....

Have a GREAT day & weekend....Sly....

DPTV585AA I believe.
"Numbers" ARE visible in his photos.
From a SIMILAR SM: 5305 Fixed, Inductor, 100MHz, 80 ohm. . . 3198 018 90020

I'd bet on the FET.Cool

I have the DPTV585AA Service Manual & unfortunately there's NO parts list....
Maybe IF we get more info from him we can proceed further..

"Numbers" ARE visible in his photos.

Visible but NOT clear !!!
One of the numbers that I can barely make out would be the "2304" which is STILL out of focus...
The "5305" (Blurred) is to the left & above that & IF in fact it's the part ("ferrite" bead) he's talking about...
The number I want is for what he calls the "ferrite" bead...

Quote
From a SIMILAR SM: 5305 Fixed, Inductor, 100MHz, 80 ohm.

Then that would make it a coil & not a "ferrite" bead...
IF that number IS right...
(BTW:...Shouldn't 100MHz be 100MH or better yet 100uH???...Seems to me that MHz=MegaHertz & MH=MilliHenry...Right ???? )

Havin fun yet ????...Tongue....

A ferrite bead secured to a piece of wire acts, in effect, as a coil - or so I was teached.

Boo-boo with manual, copied/pasted from that manual - I didn't even notice until you pointed it out.

Barcode label on front board:
SN: 0181
DC: 538B
PL: 7

Number above Bead:
5305

Printed on rear of board:
8235 033 4033 1 01

I hope this helps.

NOPE , sorry , it doesn't !!!
Part info is not locateable by board numbers....
We're not trying to replace boards here , just small parts, right ???

I personally am NOT sure what "5305" actually is....
There is some minor disagreement as to whether or not it's a "ferrite" bead OR a coil....

Let's try this again;=>....

Quote
On the >> label << where you got the model number should be a chassis number...
Please post that number...

That label will be on the back cover somewhere...
The model number WILL be on that label also....
Chassis number should be "DPTVxxx"
I ONLY want/need the "DPTV" number....

Please find & post that number...

THANKS.....Sly.....

Have a GREAT day & week....Sly...

OK...I know your sense of humor is , shall we say , a bit "different" from other folks...

BUT , I see NO connection between the word "either" as used & what's in the link....

EDIT:..6-12-2011
Still don't see a connection , but....

I'm from the Chicago area also & apparently lack the environmental influences you must have endured as a youngster growing up there....Wink....

I can't find anything more about it....
Looks like jts1957 struck again....

Do the remains of 5305 have what appears to be VERRRRY fine wires wrapped around
the outside of the center of it ???...
If it does , then it's a "coil"...
The part number (from jts1957) should be "3198 018 90020"....
Chances are that other parts ARE involved...
How much electronic/TV repair background experience do you have ????
This is going to involve some diagnostics , soldering , desoldering etc....
Do you have a DVM ,decent soldering iron , desoldering braid (AKA Chemwick..) etc...
Are you up for all that ????

GOOD LUCK....Sly....

Re: [Ron.M] No Power - Resistor/Capacitor Help [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Ron,

The remains do not have any fine wired wrapped around it at all. I took a few more pictures where I tried to zoom in a bit more to help and offer more clues:

I don't have TV repair background training. Computer repair/installation is my background so feel comfortable around boards, etc. (Have used this for many xbox, xbox 360, playstation repairs for the kids!) I do have a DVM, good soldering iron, and de-soldering braid.

I am up for the challenge as this is the kids gaming t.v. and secondary set. I would love to save it if possible.

What did you get for a reading....
Post reading....THANKS....Smile.....

IF it reads ZERO ohms, put it back in and start barking at something else.

Finally was able to access SM - Previous information is SAME for both sets.

Re: [oldschool99] No Power - Resistor/Capacitor Help [In reply to] Can't Post

oldschool99;....

SORRY about the delay....
There is NO definitive answer as to what the HELL 5305 IS in your TV....
A "coil" or a "zero ohm" resistor...
After searching the web till the giant spider bit me & several manuals , we will be doing a scientific guesswork job(??)....

So here's what I suggest you do....

1st;...From post #23;=>....

Quote
Have you checked 5305 with an ohm meter ???
What did you get for a reading....
Post reading....THANKS....Smile.....

NEED that info !!!!

Quote
IF it reads ZERO ohms, put it back in and start barking at something else.

Do as jts1957 says...
& STOP here !!!
Do NOT continue...
Post results.....THANKS....

2nd;=>....
Check around the area where 5305 is located on the chassis..
There are other similar parts to 5305 there.. They will be 5301,2,3,4 & 6...
ALL have the SAME part number in the manual jts1957 so graciously gave me a link for...
Visually look & see if there is ANY sign of wiring around any of those parts....
Read the ohms across whatever you can find & post results with their reference numbers...(53xx)..
Desolder & remove FET 7301...
Check it for dead bang shorts (0.0 ohms)
Post ALL readings & results....THANKS....
