Did you try to regulate the TV from the HV Splitter?

It may also be time to replace the CRT coolant.

If there is too much red, it could mean you are missing on of the other colors like blue or green. You might be able to adjust these using the screen control block. You can find the screen & focus controls usually behind the front speaker grill then behind a removable cover. Once there you should be able to see the neck of the tubes. Often off to the left or right of the tube area you will see a focus / screen control block. There will be 6 controls on it; 3 control the amount of screen voltage & 3 are for focus (they sometime put black tape over these controls that you will have to remove). You can use these to control how much Red, Green & Blue as well as focus for all three. Once you find these controls, try adjusting them & see if you can change each color, if so then before adjusting them any more, use your remote & go to the color menu on your TV & set the color setting to as low as it will go (you should see a black & white picture) also set the brightness to approx. half. Now slowly adjust the screen controls one at a time until you get a perfect black & white picture. If you turn them to high you will start to see retrace lines, if so, back the controls off until you see no retrace. Once you see as good of B&W picture as you can, go back to your color settings & adjust the color & brightness back up to desired taste. Once color is where you like it you may want to adjust the focus for each color using the same focus block -- Dan

It sounds like you need to replace the convergence ICs. If it is a Pioneer they will probably be STK392-110. There are usually 2 of these ICS, One will be for red and one for blue, it's best to change them both while you are that far into the repair, if you don't, you will get one replaced and the 2nd could go soon. These ICs are the biggest ICs in the TV and will be mounted to large aluminum heat sinks. They usually have approx. 15 pins each.

You can get them at www.electronix.com for around $6 each. Anyone with de-soldering skills and soldering skills can replace these ICs.

Once you de-solder them and unbolt them from the heat sink, they will often be stuck to the heat sink (this is just due to the excessive heat these ICs reach) You may have to give them a tap with a small hammer to break them loose from the heat sink. Make sure they are completely de-soldered before applying too much force to remove them or you could damage the print on the circuit board making it impossible to repair.

There will be a heat sink grease between the IC and the heat sink, try to keep as much of it as you can and apply it to the new ICs. It's white in color; this heat sink grease helps the ICs to dissipate their heat to the heat sink which helps extend their life.

These sets often have an entire metal box that pulls out of the set keeping the entire chassis & tubes etc. together. Once removed you can turn this metal cage on it's side & get at these IC's from there.

To do this, there are 6 bolts to remove, 2 at the back end of the chassis, 2 more slightly down each side going through the metal and into the bottom of the wood cabinet and 2 more in from the front of the set behind the speaker grill.

You will also have to unplug the speaker wires from the chassis as well as the front buttons. Then the metal cage, housing the electronics of the set, can be slid out the back of the TV.

If you have any other questions please ask -- Dan
