Pioneer projection TV sound is lower

I am trying to extend the life of a a verrry old (about 10 years) Pioneer projection TV. Recently the sound began to fade, in the Video I mode only (I use this setting for regular TV viewing. VCR, which is viewed in Video II, is fine.) System sound is sent through a surround tuner, using only one line (in other words VCR is sent through TV tuner).
The last time I had a problem with this TV it cost hundreds of $$$ and the shop had it for months. Hoping this is not something requiring replacement of a board or power supply. Any ideas?
