RCA D61W20 won't turn on... Can't Post

All the problems started a couple months ago. First it started changing channels by itself. Then it started turning itself off. This has all gotten worse over time. Then this last Monday it was playing just fine and turned itself off. We tried to turn it back on with the remote, when that didn't work we used to power button on the tv. The light on the power button would come on and you could hear a popping sound. Then the light would go back off and the popping would stop.
I own a Napa auto care and can do anything that needs to be done to a car but televisions just aren't my thing. Any ideas?
We have a guy coming one day next week. He says it could be a couple of things, the microprocessor being one of the possibilities. Any idea how much a microprocessor costs, just ballpark. We are trying to figure out if it's even worth trying to repair it or not.
Thanks for any suggestions,
Steve

ShockedDONT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!You have an 'OUT OF ORDINARY' tv situation I have read it before but who can solder a microprocessor? if that's the case, you have to replace the entire board. Don't waste money on anyone who tries to tell you different when you admittedly don't have any idea. Cause in the end, you will be shopping for a new tv.

If you're hearing a popping sound it's probably one of a few things with that model.

1. Bad flyback transformer.

2. Fluid leak from one of the tubes has gotten into a yoke or onto a CRT drive board and is creating a short circuit.

3. One of the CRT's itself is arcing internally.

I hate these misserable SOB's Thompson realy screwed up when they started buiding these "JEWELS". With the pop then dead, would agree with a bad Flyback, this model list three and you got to pull a number of the original, then the chance of getting a good one is low at best, Have had to replace one three times once to find one that even "rang right out of the box. But one problem you described was the changing chanels problem, this leads to the signal board were the main micro sits, and ofcource there are about four differant ones for that model so you need the AS-### off the old one, then a device called "Chipper Checker" to read the old signal board and transfer the data to the new board or you can count on hours of set up time. Have not seen many problems with coolant leak on these chassis, Guess Thompson just desided there going to leak and built in a damm to keep the coolant off the boards, but have seen more than one set covered in mouse poop because the holes under it are huge. Can't wait for these bastereds to pull this line

Normally, the blue tube leaks, fluid runs down, gets onto a wire harness then proceeds to flow onto the green CRT board corroding it which creates the electrical short. Sometimes the fluid catches into the yoke itself and works it's way in creating a short there.

These are a complete POS set. To think they're still being sold at Walmarts is discouraging to say the least, especially since my company does the work for Walmarts across the country! Unsure
