Re: [Misfire] Round 2 with the RCA PTK195 61" [In reply to] Can't Post

Misfire;...

On the yokes there are 2 sets of wires...
Both will have 4 wires each...
One set should have a red , blue , yellow & a green wire...(Usually)..
That set is for Horiz & vertical deflection & IS NOT the set we want...
The set we want will have thinner wires..
That set is for the convergence...
The thinner wires on the red yoke will go to the convergence board...
There are 3 connectors running along the left side of the panel , I believe...
See pix below...
The bottom connector should be "J19301" & is the connector for the red yoke..
UNPLUG the wiring that goes to that connector...
The center one , "J19302" , is for the green yoke...
Disconnect that one & PLUG the red connector into the green connection..
Plug the wires that go to the green yoke into the red connection...
Essentially what we are doing here is switching convergence circuits from the red & green to see what gives..
Turn on the TV ...
Do not worry about the convergence being out of kilter, it will be !!...
What we want to know is IF the previous red box that you had before is STILL red or did it change to green..
Please post results...

THANKS...

First three jumpers determines the color drive that is fed to each CRT cathode. Necessary for a working set to have ONLY one of each color. Since all three CRTs are the same, usually just swapping whole boards (if wire length adequate) is sufficient for testing.

My opinion: Put 'em back.

not enuff wire length to swap small CRT boards, all CRT G,R,B, jumpers are in correct location, so I swapped J19301 with J19302 to no avail, no change, red cone still there.

Misfire;.....

IF you really want to "Misfire" here , go ahead & continue to go off on tangents of your own & NOT do exactly what is asked of you only...
Namely;=>..

Quote
not enuff wire length to swap small CRT boards,

NOWHERE did I ask you to SWAP the CRT boards...
I specifically asked you to

Quote
Put them back EXACTLY as they were...

There should have been ALL the wire length needed to do that adequately...

We are going to switch the red & green yokes next..
From the pix you have in your first post , it looks like you may have something else in the way of sliding the yokes off the CRTs..
IF so , do NOT attempt ANYTHING till I give you the go-ahead...
Please take & post a CLEAR close-up pix of the green CRT neck that is shown in your pix...

THANKS... Wink

Misfire;...

A bit of confusion here , NO worries & NO apology needed..Smile....

I did ask for the green CRT only , however the pix is GREAT !!!
My concern has to do with the "white" thing wrapped around the CRT neck...

Please check & see IF there are ANY wires going to that white sleeve..
Look around the whole neck...
Since you are going to slide the yokes off the CRTs . in your judgment , do you think that IF there are NO wires going to the sleeve , will the yoke slide past the sleeve WITHOUT causing ANY damage to it OR the sleeve ???
(That's the LONGEST question I have EVER written !!!)

THANKS...

Misfire;....

Complications , complications , damm , complications !!!..

OK..
I'm about 95% certain that I know what is wrong with your TV , but , am having a problem proving it...

We are going to mess with the RED CRT ONLY !!!..
Take a close look at the sleeve for a beginning of the sleeve's tape..
OR a shallower depression in the tape that runs from top to bottom of the sleeve..
Post observations..
THANKS...

[URL=http://s772.photobucket.com/user/RonMa/media/CRT%20Neck%20w%20Sleeve_zpscehozlzf.jpg.html]

The yoke is a transformer that deflects the pix from top to bottom & left to right..
It's full name is "Horizontal & Vertical Deflection Transformer" or yoke for short...
It got the name "yoke" from the neck collar that horses wear...
It is the device mounted directly above the sleeve we are going to somehow bypass..

GREAT PIX !!!..

[URL=http://s772.photobucket.com/user/RonMa/media/CRT%20SVM%20COIL%20-12_zpsuv2sqb6x.jpg.html]

Just as I thought !!!..
That is a SVM (Scan Velocity Modulator)...

Get a black permanent felt tip marker...
Put lines on the glass up against the coil at the green lines...
Make lines on the coil to & on the CRT glass as the red lines show...
CAREFULLY peel the rest of the tape off & the coil should come off the CRT..
That tape may/may not be re-useable..
No worry , can be fixed later...
IF you can not get the coil off the CRT , STOP & post here & will figure out another method...
AGAIN , we ARE ONLY working on the RED CRT !!!..
Note that the word "TOP" on the coil is pointing toward the BOTTOM of the CRT...

OK , that's great !!!...

Now it gets tricky & DANGEROUS...]

Using the pix below;=>..

[URL=http://s772.photobucket.com/user/RonMa/media/CRT%20YOKE%20MARKINGS_zpskavgywqr.jpg.html]

The white item at the top of the pix is the YOKE !!!...
Remove the small panel (circuit board) at the bottom of the CRT..
Clear any wiring etc at & around the bottom area to allow passage of the yoke once you free it up..
Check & MAKE SURE that you have plenty of slack in the 2 sets of wiring (The red convergence (P19300 & J19301) & deflection sets , (P19104 & J19104) from the convergence board..
You will need enough slack to slide the yoke off the CRT...
Using your black marker , mark the tape against the white tabs shown in red..(The more the merrier!!..)..
Then using a 1/4" hex nut driver loosen the clamp in the green circle...
Try & twist the yoke in one direction or another & see if the yoke turns..
Do NOT FORCE the issue..
The glass on the CRT necks is very thin compared to the rest of the CRT & you can break the neck & not only will you destroy the CRT , but you can get hurt as the CRT is under a vacuum & when it implodes glass will fly in all directions..
IF it does NOT turn try loosing up the clamp some more...
IF it still does not turn , you'll need a very small flat blade screwdriver...
REMOVE the clamp from the yoke..
Note the slotted area in the center of the clamp...
That is where you'll put it back on..
Using that screwdriver GENTLY pry up each tab using EXTREME CARE...
Those tabs MAY have become somewhat dry rotted & brittle with age..
DO NOT BREAK THEM OFF !!!...
There are tabs around the other side you can not see in the pix...
USE care when you pry those loose...
IF you do that successfully , the yoke should now turn freely...
Make sure that when you do this , you hold on to the yoke so that IF & when it is freed up , it doesn't go sliding down the CRT & causing some damage or maybe destroying the CRT...
You should have enough clearance to slide the yoke off the CRT ..
At the bottom of the CRT is a socket with pins etc..
In the center of that area is either a green stem or a bare glass stem...
Do NOT under ANY circumstances break that stem..
That stem seals the vacuum inside the CRT & IF broken , you'll have a 61" doorstop or one helluva boat anchor......Pirate
BE CAREFUL NOT TO BEND OR BREAK OFF ANY PINS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE CRT !!!...

Position the yoke so you can take a close-up of the inside looking from the top down thru it..
Please post pix...

PS:...
There are 2 rings with tabs just above the clamp in the pix...
Mark their location with your marker...
Those ARE usually easy to break , so do NOT grab them or move them in any way...

IF you run into ANY glitches or problems STOP & post & we'll figure out a solution..

GOOD LUCK..Smile...

THANKS...

removed clamp and marked the tabs to tape, tabs were still soft and pliable, tape gave some grief in removal but I got it off,,, seems to be wetness residue on funnel part of glass, prob from TV coolant leakage that started this chain reaction.

No sir, I did not remove that tape,,,, I did mark it to realign it back in its original position when going back,,,, only tape removed was for SVM because of wires,,,, also marked. there is a slight wetness at the funnel neck of glass, where it horn's out,, im sure it had gotten into the red coils of white part i removed,,, could that be causing the issue?
