Samsung 42" Convergence problem Can't Post

Have a Samsung 42" projection TV. Model number HCM4216WX/XAC. The picture went weird. The colours did not line up. When I went through the menu screens to the manual convergence set up the green crosshairs are all over the place while the red and blue ones are in neat rows and columns. The center of the top row of the green crosshairs has drooped down and the bottom corners also have dropped down. I'm not a TV repair person and the TV is outside of the warranty. Decided to take the back off the TV and have a look. On the three CRT's there is a slotted adjustment with wingnut. Would this be to adjust the alignment. Any help would be appreciated.

Those are the adjustments for focus. By loosening the wingnut and rotating the lens housing, the lens moves in and out, adjusting the focus. You really shouldn't ever need to adjust these, as they are rough adjustments. You can find adjust the focust electronically.

You are having a very similar problem as I am on my pioneer RPTV, with the green convergence. I'm not sure if your TV allows you to adjust the green convergence, mine doesnt. Since the green is the center projector, it is stationary, and you adjust the red and blue to match it, at least on my TV. It could be a problem with the convergence board as well, which is rather costly to replace.

This is a easy one to work on since you have the back off you may notice two large Ic's mounted to a separate board left and on the CRT mount, I belive the Ic's are STK392-040 could be wrong, any way this board is easly removed and then you can change these Ic's your self or run the board down to the repair shop and have them do it, that should corect your problem as that board is the convergance amplifiyer

By any chance, would you know roughly how much money would I be spending if I were to buy a convergence board, namely for a Hitachi Projection TV?

Re: [Guest] Samsung 42" Convergence problem [In reply to] Can't Post

I have the Samsung 42" HDTV rear projection TV. Almost 2 (December 2002) years ago I bought it from Costco. 1 month after (Jan 2003) it developed the convergence problem. I returned it to Costco and they gave me a new one. Now in May of 2004 it again developed the convergence problem. I paid someone to have it fixed. Worked fine until Oct 2004 - once again it developed the convergence problem. I found this site and read about the two ICs to replace. Ordered the two ICs (they were about $10-$12 each) and replaced them. It did not fix the problem. I have given up with Samsung - never again.

Heres a pix of the convergance board removed.Using Japaneezz subs for these Ic will always result in them failing soon, best bet is to use the orginal Samsung replacments, however as these are 47.00 each we here found it easer and quicker to order the entire board ( AA95-02002A ) then you also get all resistors, caps and fuses that may have failed as well. On some Samsungs this board can be replaced on others the convergance sits on the main deflection board but all parts that may fail are included on the replacment board and can easly be removed and transfered to the main deflection and the cost of this board is $106.00 at Vancebaldwin.com for those of you without a samsung account

My old man has a 42" SAMSUNG that developed this problem just after 2 years. He called a repair man and the guy changed the 2 STK ICs plus a cap. However, it blew up quickly once the TV was powered on. He changed another 2 STK and no blow up the second time. It's working fine for now, but not sure how much longer the TV will last. Only time will tell ...

Remarkable: My 42" had the same issue after about 2.5 years. I was quoted $350 to repair the IC by a Samsung recommended local repairman.

I'd rather not attempt the repair myself. Considering the part cost roughly $100 - is this a ripoff?

Boy this one got me in BIG ASS TROUBLE Heres the deal way back in this thred a guy had a problem with a SAMSUNG and he provided a model number, the advise to simply replace a convergance board is correct for HIS MODEL SAMSUNG, just because some else also owns a Samsung with convergance problems that replacing the board will fix it. Differant model numbers have different guts in them, And on that not Hitachi's Pioneers, Toshiba's are also not the Model Smamsung that I recamended a board for, All same syptom but each one involes differant parts, boards andf where the part is located, I only bring this up because as of this monday I have recieved three separate E-mails where some one read the thred and bought the Samsung board and now it dont fit in there Pioneer

Re: [mattdonk] Samsung 42" Convergence problem [In reply to] Can't Post

I came to this site because I had convergence problems with my Samsung 42" (HCM4216W). My problem was like others on here, red way off and a convex look to the screen, I think thats called pin cushioned, I am not sure. Anyway, I read on here to replace the convergence board part number BP9400383A, I got it from partstore.com, $70. I got the part installed it, did perfect focus, but the screen was unchanged. Well, I felt defeated and called a Samsung repair shop (got the name of the local shop by calling 800- samsung). The guy at the shop explained that I got the right part, but that I needed to do a perfect focus adjustment using a special menu on the tv. With the TV on I had to press, mute, 1,8,3 in that order and a special screen came up. It is a grid, but you need to have a Samsung service manual to know what remote keys you need to navigate and calibrate the convergence. This guy was nice enough to fax me a few pages from his manual explaining all this. I did the adjustment, and it worked! Picture is perfect again. I read the posts on here and got help, so I wanted to let you all know what worked for me! If you have questions feel free to contact me.

I'm guessing there was a serious design flaw here that over works the IC's in these units. Mine wont power up...i'm gonna change the IC's, then maybe the filter CAPS. Anyone had a power on problem with their TV?CrazyCrazyCrazyCrazy

Check your email. rick777 for info on manual....I've read lots of horror stories about these sets, one guy said he had the same problem as me. LED power light in front flashes a code when plugged in but tv will not power up...His was under warranty..He said two tv techs came to his house and in fifteen minutes changed all three boards on the crt's and now it works fine..I don't have that luxury...Does anyone know what the flashing led codes are? I have the service manual and it does not mention them...Should be fun trying to get them from samsung or akai(which seems to be samsungs phantom brother company). I have more time and patience than I do money so I need to find the bad components and not entire boards...Shocked
