Re: [Pageplayer] Samsung 42" Convergence problem [In reply to] Can't Post

Just wanted to stop by and post my thanks to everyone giving advice in this thread. I believe you've all saved me a ton of money.

I've got a 1-1/2 year old AKAI PT4298HD and it's showing the same symptoms of bad convergence everyone here is describing. The authorized AKAI dealer in my area wanted $175 per hour, plus parts. I just ordered the board from partstore.com, and hopefully it will be easy to install and it will fix the problem.

I tried playing with the Convergence Menu (Mute 1-8-3), and after pressing a few button and seeing the results, I think I have it partially figured out. I'm just worried now that while doing that I messed something up so it's going to need re-aligned once I put the new card in.

Because of that, could someone please send me the actual instructions that have been mentioned in this thread? My email is snagswolf@hotmail.com Thanks.

Also, has anyone taken off the anti-glare protective screen on this TV? I've seen where people mention on other websites that they've done this, and how the picture looks so much better when the protective screen is off. (I think it looks pretty good with it on).

I'll be sure to stop by and update how the convergence board replacement went.

Thanks again to everyone.

Re: [snagswolf] Samsung 42" Convergence problem [In reply to] Can't Post

A quick update:

Ordered the board from partstore.com, and although the board I ordered had a part number of BP94-00383A, the board that arrived was marked with a part number of BP95-00142E. Visually comparing it to the board installed in my TV, they looked identical, with all the same connections.

I disconnected the old board one connection at a time, plugging each wire into the new board as I went. Then it was a simple one-screw off and back on to attach the new board to the TV.

Fired the TV up and bingo, it worked! Didn't have to play with the convergence menu at all. I'm sitting here enjoying my HD once again.

So, thanks again to everyone for the advice. You turned a probable ~$500 bill into about $120. The hardest part was figuring out how to get the back of the TV off.

If anyone has any questions about the procedure, feel free to email me at snagswolf@hotmail.com. I didn't receive a copy of the manual, so I can't forward that to anyone.

Re: [snagswolf] Samsung 42" Convergence problem [In reply to] Can't Post

I feel everyones pain, Am having the same problem. It happened when I first bought the TV about 3 years ago and I called Samsung. Luckly then it was under warranty and the repair was fully covered. Just about 3 days ago it just went off again. Mainly the red went all wonky. I tried to do the perfect focus and it just made it to 25 % and if I was lucky 33%. So I called Samsung, just to see if by any chance they could fix it again or had any advice, and they told me that they had never heard of this problem happening twice, which I now find rather amusing. Because its happening all over the place. But thanks to this forum, I have found out some great information. I have ordered the replacement part and hopefully will have no problems replacing it. Any words of advice before I start would be greatly appreciated.
Oh and if someone has the Service Manual and think it was helpful please can you send it over? Email address is n.pall@comcast.com
Thanks

Re: [fixeruper] Samsung 42" Convergence problem [In reply to] Can't Post

Just wanted to thank everyone on this post for the info. I too had a red covergence problem. I bought the service manual online (PDF form) and the BP94-00383a board from partstore.com. Bottom line, my AKAI 4298HD looks great again. I am having trouble with my perfect focus (it says no sensor data). I think I need to make an alignment jig perhaps to get the grid lines in the right place. Anyway it really doesn't matter because the convergence alignment on the service menu has made the screen look great!
BTW
I have a friend who bought this same TV at almost the exactly the same time I did (within a couple of weeks of me). It went out a week before mine (same convergence issue). I don't know why Samsung is not recalling these units or at least fixing them! I plan to email them and give them a little piece of my mind. Two televisions going out after a year and a half at the same time with the same problem is more then a fate, its a design issue.Frown

the STK ic's run very hot and generally speaking heat and electronics dont go well together. Also some people dont replace the heatsink compound when changing the ic's. This must be changed to prevent futher trouble

I bought the entire assembly so the heat compound should already be on the IC's. I plan to buy some heat transfer compond and goop it on the back of the aluminum plate that holds the IC's. I hope this helps take the heat away from the aluminum plate that holds the ICS. a single screw and just touch contact seems to me insufficent contact to convect heat from the aluminum plate that contains the ICS to the television chassis. Since it took a year and a half for it to thermally fail before it will be a while before I can tell if this solution worked or not.

Just a word of caution to anyone ordering this part online. Make sure you order the Convergence AMP, not the "Convergence Module" (that is a different part and not the one everyone is talking about here).
There are a few different part numbers that will work, but the one I got for my HCN4226W is BP95-00142E: ASSY Sub PCB-CG Amp.

Hi, I'm on the broken Samsung bandwagon as well. Ordered the new IC board from partstore.com, but I fooled around with the convergence quite a bit. I think I'll need to do the mute-1-8-3 menu in order to get my TV working properly after the new IC board.
Anyone who has the pertinent pages, it would be greatly appreciated if they could send them to me! =)

I ordered the board from Partstore.com, and received the BP95-0142E - it looks exactly the same as my current board, but it came with two of the connectors, which have slightly different connections. Has anybody experienced this and do you have any suggestions?

If you have any ideas please email me at chris-penney@shaw.ca

Thank you to this forum!!!!
I have a 2.5 yr old Akai PT4298HD which started to experience similar picture/color problems described here. Taking a chance without opening it up, I ordered BP94-00383a from a local Samsung repair shop which was expectedly substituted with BP95-00142e. Cost was approx USD$120, received in 2 days, and cheaper than a minimum service call charge. As it turned out, the original board was BP41-00045b but matched new board connectors and all.
Installed new board -- TV works! Picture looks quite good especially on HD broadcasts but I think it still needs some minor adjustment. Did the Mute-1-8-3 thing but couldn't find my way around without a service manual. Now attempting to buy one on eBay.

I am currently not having any PICTURE issues with my samsung HCM4216W except for a static issue in the speakers?

I dont have the manual for this tv due to I bought it from a friend.

Could someone that did receive the manual for this TV send to me at jon.price@verizon.net or fax ATTN : Jon Price (805)735-3677

or let me know how to turn off internal speakers or why I am getting a static poping noise from the speakers when I dont have any audio sources into the tv?

Re: [techchris] Samsung 42" Convergence problem [In reply to] Can't Post

I had similar problems with my AKAI 4298HD (2 years old). The TV would not power on. To locate the problem, I unplugged the power wires to the convergence board and it powered on just fine. Turns out that the STK392-040 IC on the right side of my convergence board had short-circuited. So I bought a replacement from a local part store.

VERY IMPORTANT:
Before re-installing the STK392-040, I did some testing, and I recommend anyone else with the same problem to do this too. It may prevent your new ICs from failing after you re-install them. It seems that when the ICs fail, other components may fail as well (or for whatever reason, the components fail which causes the ICs to fail).

Before replacing the IC, I desoldered many other components (one at a time) on the board and found a few other damaged circuits. I replaced two resistors (orange, white and gold bands) that were open circuited (I don't know the value, but I compared them to other ones that were good), one electrolytic can-type capacitor (22uF) that was out of spec, and another small capacitor that looked like a resistor because the capacitance was different from the other ones that I measured with the same markings (the first 2 bands were green or blue with other gold ones). I got the replacement parts for free by desoldering them from a scrap circuit board that a local TV repair shop gave me. I think the resistors are important because they are connected between the amplifier output pins and "ground" which can be a problem if the resistors have failed.

On a side note, after I replaced the failed parts, everything was ok except the vertical red convergence. Turns out that the NEW STK392-040 was defective from the manufacturer! It was replaced free-of-charge from the part store and when I installed it, the TV LOOKS GREAT!!!!!!

However, before I realised that the replacement IC was defective, I thought making adjustments in the service menu would help, and now anytime I try to do the "Perfect Focus" the TV tells me to "Check Factory Data" and will not perform the "Perfect Focus"

Does anyone have a copy of the service manual that they can email me (mcwhiskey@shaw.ca)? or some advice on how to get the TV to perform the "Perfect Focus" again?

Also, does anyone have any thoughts on installing a small DC cooling fan to cool the heat sink? Even just operating the TV for an hour or so makes the heat sink so hot that you can't even touch it without burning your fingers. Not good for electronic components....

Thanks for listening.

After almost three years, my HCN4226W started having problems with the green color last night. Finding this forum was great. I am ordering the part right after I finish writing this message. If someone could forward those service manual convergence pages to adiemina@adelphia.net , that would be awesome. Thanks again people, this forum saved me big bucks!!!

Re: [adi] Samsung 42" Convergence problem [In reply to] Can't Post

Mistakes I made. HCM4216 Convergence problem.

Didn't take pictures of the convergence board when replacing and I interchanged the two plugs on the left of the new convergence board.

Replaced the replacement board but I am certain the deflection board that that blue plug goes to was bad so I replaced that also and ordered a third convergence board.

I took videos and digitals of the big deflection board and am sure that it was properly installed.

Don't go away. I finally got what looked like a workable picture but....

I had screwed with the convergence and got it so out of whack earlier, that I ended up - I believe - overheating the set and it popped its saftey breaker, I believe.

Wait, there's more.....When the picture collapsed, there was a very bright vertical line down the middle. When I got the picture back for a short while, there was a dark, very narrow, vertical line down the middle. I may have burned the phosphors on one or more of the CRTs.

Present time: the set just clicks and won't come back on.

Very important: do not, do NOT screw with the convergence (with your remote - "mute - 1 8 3") BEFORE you fix or replace that convergence board (BP95-00143E), especially if the picture is way off, and after reading this thread you know that you need to fix or replace the convergence board.

Many here have done good work but I suspect others like me screwed up and just lost track of the process, even after reading some of the very good posts here.

Uh, no, I don't plan on spending any more on this set. Not Samsung's fault, but the set is available to anyone for parts.

Re: [adi] Samsung 42" Convergence problem [In reply to] Can't Post

Update on my HCN4226N:
Saturday evening I ordered the whole replacement board BP95-00142e for my original board BP41-00045b (thanks to Ernie5771 in the post #63 for the info). It arrived Wednesday, and I replaced it the same night. One connector in the middle was slightly different shape, but after double checking that all the wires are coming and going to the same place as original ones, I used a knife to cut of a plastic part that was in the way from the original cable connector. That was it. TV works great.
I oredered the part from partstore.com. My total cost was $106.xx: $78.60 for the actual part, $19.9x for 2nd day fedex shipping, and tax was the rest. I could have saved additional $10 had I gone with regular shipping, but I couldn't wait to get the part in the house and try the repair.
I saw some large capacitors inside the TV when I opened it. The board I replaced was in the upper right corner, when you take off the lower portion of the back, away from everything, really easy to get to. But, DO BE CAREFUL NOT TO TOUCH THE CAPACITORS, they are EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.
Thanks again, everyone. I saved a bunch of money by doing this on my own. This was first time I tried anything like this in a TV. I did have minimum experience tinkering with PCs. Even if you don't have any experience you can do this replacement.
Hope this helps the next person in our situation...

Ditto on the Samsung 4226 confounded convergence problem. My picture looked like this: ) ( 2005 paid $400 for 2 each STK392-040 to be replaced. A year later the picture shows 3 distinct colors seperated and goes in a~~~~~~~~~~~~ across the screen. In assuming that the IC's are for vertical and horizontal convergence, should I get the part number BP95-00142e to remedy my problem?
I've attached the much asked for repair Manual if anyone wants it. Your imput has been genius and wish me luck on our repair attempt.

Well,
I'm back with the same problem again.
I replaced the board earlier this year (January) after seeing distortion.
Easy job, worked great. 3 days ago, the TV decided not to turn on at all.
Took the old board (which I saved), put it in and it works (with distortion, of course).
So, now I have to buy another board. I'd let you know how it goes.

I lost the original remote some time ago for my Samsung SP434JMF. Bought a new one and the NEW remote does not have the "CONV" button beneath the TXT controls. Samsung discontinued 19 out of the 20 remotes. I only realised this when the screen went stupid and there was no damn convergence button. I rang Samsung, they were abusive, the company I bought the new remote from has disappeared and I need to access the damn convergence menu.

Can one of you incredibly resourceful people please help me. The TV has been great until now.

I will buy a second hand original remote if I knew where to get one...

Re: [Guest] Samsung 42" Convergence problem [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks to so many of you who've posted here about the Samsung convergence problem. With your guidance, I was able to repair my HCN653W for $116 (includes 2-day air and tax) and about a half hour of easy work. Anyone who's ever replaced a PC hard drive should find this repair easy. (You don't have to partition or format anything after connecting the cables.)

I swapped a new convergence module (Samsung part BP95-00142P) for the burnt out one that was giving me horrific red-convergance problems. Opening and closing the back panel on the TV was half the battle. The back panel is held on by something like a dozen separate screws! The location/identity of the bad convergence board becomes obvious as soon as you open the back panel and look around for a part like the one you've got as a replacement. The board is held in place by a single screw. Then you have to unconnect and then reconnect 5 cables. The cables come off with a bit of finger work, go back on as easy as pie. The only slightly tricky thing, for me, was to avoid tangling the cables (each of which is a compound beastie, not just a unitary chord).

The result, thus far, is perfect. The picture (especially after a single "perfect focus" which takes 2 minutes) is precisely as good as it was before the set broke, including on HD channels. My only concern now is, how long with the replacement part last? If it's more than half a year, I'd say the repair was worthwhile.

I only paid $88 (plus shipping and tax) for my BP95-00142P. That's cool, but I can't say I was happy with the way I was treated by the company who sold it, PartStore.com. I ordered it with 2nd-day air shipping. Obviously, I wanted it fast. After they hadn't shipped it for 2 days, I called and their rep refused to divulge the reason for the delay, but told me I had no choice but to wait at least another 2 days before he would even consider letting me cancel the order. I did cancel 2 days later (4 days after I ordered). But then, the evening of the 4th day, they came back with an email telling me they'd finally shipped my part. So I paid for 2nd-day air, and got my part 6 working days after I ordered!

Convergence Fixed Sansung HCL4715W [In reply to] Can't Post

I just wanted to say thanks to the posts on this forum. I have a HCL4715W that the convergence chips went out on. When it was under warranty they fixed it. it just went out againFrown But thanks to these fine people posting here I learned to go to www.vancebaldwin.com and found the part# for my board (the one in the middle with the stk chips, I did not have a separate board for the stk chips and I am not much of a solderer) which was AA95-01846D then went to partsstore.com and ordered the part for $170.00. When it arrived in about 5 working days I popped that baby in and it was golden. Thank you all very much. Who ever posted the pictures of the stk chips it was a big help. Oh, you really don't need a service manual to do this. Just make sure you connect it up the same way you disconnected it and run perfect focus when you are done.

I attached a couple ofpictures of the board. The stk chips are on the left with those big heatsinks.

Re: [rick777ok] Samsung 42" Convergence problem [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for all the help thats been posted here. I have a Samsung HCN4226W that had the convergence problem, the blue color was out of alignment. I called the nearest Samsung repair shop and was quoted a price of $310 Can. labor incl.(parts-$150, labor $160) to replace the whole board. I agreed to this and he ordered the board. After a few days he came and replaced the board. Apparantly he said all the board are made for the European specs and he had to unsolder a power plug? from the defective board and place it on the new board. Then after he put the new board in (only took a few minutes), he went into the grid menu (mute 1-8-3)and adjusted the fine settings.
He took almost 20 mins to adjust the grid, going through all the colors, you could really see that the grid was off. After that, it worked perfectly, he also warned me not to touch the perfect focus again because it only takes an average of the color settings and will throw off the fine settings. I know it should be easy to do now, but not before a very helpful technician has showed you the stuff. I think the money was well spent consider this is my first time with tv repairs.
