I had similar problems with my AKAI 4298HD (2 years old). The TV would not power on. To locate the problem, I unplugged the power wires to the convergence board and it powered on just fine. Turns out that the STK392-040 IC on the right side of my convergence board had short-circuited. So I bought a replacement from a local part store. VERY IMPORTANT: Before re-installing the STK392-040, I did some testing, and I recommend anyone else with the same problem to do this too. It may prevent your new ICs from failing after you re-install them. It seems that when the ICs fail, other components may fail as well (or for whatever reason, the components fail which causes the ICs to fail). Before replacing the IC, I desoldered many other components (one at a time) on the board and found a few other damaged circuits. I replaced two resistors (orange, white and gold bands) that were open circuited (I don't know the value, but I compared them to other ones that were good), one electrolytic can-type capacitor (22uF) that was out of spec, and another small capacitor that looked like a resistor because the capacitance was different from the other ones that I measured with the same markings (the first 2 bands were green or blue with other gold ones). I got the replacement parts for free by desoldering them from a scrap circuit board that a local TV repair shop gave me. I think the resistors are important because they are connected between the amplifier output pins and "ground" which can be a problem if the resistors have failed. On a side note, after I replaced the failed parts, everything was ok except the vertical red convergence. Turns out that the NEW STK392-040 was defective from the manufacturer! It was replaced free-of-charge from the part store and when I installed it, the TV LOOKS GREAT!!!!!! However, before I realised that the replacement IC was defective, I thought making adjustments in the service menu would help, and now anytime I try to do the "Perfect Focus" the TV tells me to "Check Factory Data" and will not perform the "Perfect Focus" Does anyone have a copy of the service manual that they can email me (mcwhiskey@shaw.ca)? or some advice on how to get the TV to perform the "Perfect Focus" again? Also, does anyone have any thoughts on installing a small DC cooling fan to cool the heat sink? Even just operating the TV for an hour or so makes the heat sink so hot that you can't even touch it without burning your fingers. Not good for electronic components.... Thanks for listening.
