Re: [oldstripes] Samsung HCM422W Power on light blinks [In reply to] Can't Post

Have same problem...pls help.
My on light blinks (red) anytime I press anything on the remote but no sound or picture on TV (Samsung HCM422W). The TV have had no problem since I bought 6 six years ago. Before the problem came up, my kid left TV on for a few hours (no input from cable, dvd) - when he went back in it's dead except for the blinking red light.
Thanks for any help.

There are a few things this could be.

Samsung sets are really bad for tubes leaking and dripping down on the neck boards (or the main boards) and shorting out components.

What I mean by this is big screen picture tubes have glycol in them between the surface of the tube and the lens that bolts to the front of the tube. This glycol helps to keep the tube cool & the light transfer etc. Samsung sets seem to be the most common set for this glycol fluid to leak between the tube and the lens, it then either drips on the main circuit boards or runs down the necks of the tubes on to the neck boards (the small boards on the tubes) or both. This fluid is conductive and causes all kinds of problems by shorting out components on any of the boards.

You can check for this by first UNPLUGGING THE SET from the power & examining the board. If any of the boards look wet or greasy looking then feel these areas to see if they are slippery or greasy feeling (the boards should be dry everywhere). If this is the case and you find that the tubes have leaked, these sets are not economically worth repairing (If you're lucky they might be worth $50 to a TV shop for parts at this point).

If you find this glycol has leaked be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after handling it because it is highly poisonous! It's basically a form of antifreeze.

If it is not the tubes leaking the next common things to check are shorted ICs on the neck boards (number on the ICs are TDA6111Q) there will be one on each neck board and any one of them could be what's causing this problem.

There are sometimes resistors and diodes that go bad on the neck boards as well.

If it is none of the above there is another part called a proscan module. It's a big metal looking thing on the signal board -- Dan

Thanks Dan.
When I checked the boards, i saw no sign of glycol. They all look/feel clean, er dusty.
Now the next step is to check the ICs on the neck boards - I did see them but hesitant to do anything. Since I'm not good at checking this, I most likely will leave this to the pros to check out. At least i know it's not the leaky glycol issue.
One thing I ntoiced tho is when i turn on the TV, the small 'tube' on the neck board (my right when facing tv) does not light up, while the other 2 (middle and left) flickers a bit before dying off. This right tube had a blue plastic base on it. Not sure if this info helps to diagnose the problem more.
Thanks again for any inputs. really appreciate it....
