Sony projection tv with blue horizonal lines Can't Post

I have a Sony projection tv, model #KP-51WS500. When the tv is on and the screen is black, there are 8-12 horizonal blue lines arching across the screen from right to left. You won't notice them unless the screen is black.. Any ideas???
Thanks.............

True about the Sony recall there A boards have come up Crap on these sets, but being as this board is 575.00 plus a $450.00 dollar core charge you better find a authorized service center fast, othe problem not as common as the A board fail is there screen/ focus will arch and throw the screen off on one or more colors, this usually can be fixed by turning the screen down ( In your case blue ) till the retrace lines disappears

I have this problem as well, with a KP57HW40 bought in Fall 2002. Where do you find info about this 'recall'? I went to the Sony site and there is nothing.

Judging by the number of viewings this particular posting has had I assume there are quite a few folks interested in this info.

Re: [Guest] Sony projection tv with blue horizonal lines [In reply to] Can't Post

After careful research both with Sony directly and with 3 different Sony authorized service companies I have found that the "recall" comment in this forum related to this problem is not true. The only recall associated with the 57" TV is for a flicker problem on a very small subset of the units. You can find that recall by searching on the Sony site but it does not relate to the horizontal blue bars.

Mine is getting fixed with $90 in parts (the CVS and something else), and then there is the labor and tax (doh!).

I just noticed this problem with my TV as well over the past week or so. So annoying. Anyway, where is the repair only $90? Is it worth calling Sony over to let them know this is a common problem?

Getting same thing except mine is red. Difficult to see when picture is present but when viewed on a blank screen the red is brightest in the center and goes outward with many curved bright red lines running horizontally.

Purchased my KP-51HW40 2 years ago.
1st and last sony tv I'll buy, not pleased at all after spending $2k on this only to have something go wrong 2 years later.

I did locate a service manual online if anyone wants it, I've uploaded it to my website downloads area. Beware it is very large 16mb...

Re: [Guest] Sony projection tv with blue horizonal lines [In reply to] Can't Post

Well the local Sony tech just left. All he did was adjust the red Screen Voltage on the screen/focus block in the front of the tv. Just an every so slight turn of the screw and now it's all better... Cost me $50.
He said that occasionally it needs to be done, that eventually I'll have to do blue and green as well but that I wouldn't need to call him since I saw how and what he did. Cool....

Re: [Guest] Sony projection tv with blue horizonal lines [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks guys...I fixed my KP51HW40 last night with your help. I used the service manual provided by vtully@tds.net at http://rsfsquad.org/download/KP51HW40-RA6.pdf and the posting on May 27, 2004.

The service manual on page 8 shows how to adjust the Red/Blue/Green screen voltages. To get to the adjustment board, take the front speaker grill off (two screws at the bottom left and right) and set it aside. No need to disconnect any wires. Then remove the plywood board with 4 screws that exposes the screen/focus adjustments. The top 3 adjustments are for focus, and you need not mess with these. The bottom 3 adjustments are for Red/Blue/Green screen voltage rough adjustments. My screen showed red lines, so I had to turn the bottom right adjustment with a philips head screwdriver just slightly until the red gun retrace lines where no longer visible.

I am an electrical engineer by trade, but you do not need any technical background at all to do this adjustment. If you can operate a screwdriver, you can save yourself the hassle of a service call and save a few bucks. Make sure no kids are around when making the adjustment and make sure the screwdriver touches nothing else in the TV because the set has to be powered on to make the adjustment. Since the screen/focus block is right up front, danger of shock is extremely minute.

The adjustments have white marker paint on them, so if you adjust the wrong gun, it is a simple matter to return it to it's original adjustment by realigning the paint marks.

It sure would have been nice if Sony had mentioned this problem in there KnowledgeBase...Sly

This post was very helpful to me. I did exactly as you said and my blue lines went away. Sometimes it got so bad that my TV would turn itself off. I think I fixed it now even though I have a different model sony. Thanks for the help.

Great Post! I have been living with the blue retrace lines on my KP-51WS500 for a couple of months. I've been trying to find information on it for a while and this is the first post with definitive information on how to fix it. Thanks again.

Re: [Guest] Sony projection tv with blue horizonal lines [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks guys. It's great information. I have just fixed my red bell curve lines on my KP51HW40.

However, I have another problem. My projection TV seems missing an inch of video on top and an inch on bottom in normal mode. I was hoping it could be shrunk within the screen like computer monitor. But that's not the case with the projection TV. Does anyone have any information of how to zoom the picture within the screen in normal mode?

Thanks guys I downloaded manual and was able to fix the blue line problem on my KP57HW40 TV last night. You are correct it just takes a very small turn to the left of the Blue screen adjustment. I have been having the problem for several weeks now. Circuit City tech told me that the Blue color board was unstable and to contact a TV repair service. But with your guys help I was able to fix the problem at NO COST. Thanks again great broad!!![

Re: [Guest] Sony projection tv with blue horizonal lines [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for the information. I was easily able to eliminate the red wavy lines on my Sony 57-inch widescreen. The only tools you need are flat head and Phillips screwdrivers. First, take the front speaker panel off (the two screws are under the plastic caps on the bottom right and left front). Then, take the twist tie off of the attached cord to give it some slack. Finally, remove the thin plywood panel and adjust the bottom screws slightly to the left. This fixes both red and blue lines. It was an easy fix, so do not pay a $100 service bill.

It works just like the day i bought it.
For blue its the bottom left knob and if you turn it to quick the picture disappears.Just turn your tv off and on again to regain picture.

Re: [Guest] Sony projection tv with blue horizonal lines [In reply to] Can't Post

hi, i bought a kp-57hw40 a few years ago.
i started to get the slow to boot blue flashes on my tv right after the warrenty expired. I had noticed from almost the begining that there was flickering of the tv screen. most noticable when the screen was black...there would be a flicker...almost like i was looking at an old film movie. was annoying as hell. I wrote sony about it and got no response of course. then when the blue flashes started comming and the tv started to take "time" to boot up like it had to warm up or something i went to sony's site and found the recall info.

that was the begining of all hell with sony. I was put thought the worst treatment of any company regarding this recall. treatment included being put though various levels of customer support (first starts at india) and each time having to explain the problem (even whent they said they saved my info on file time and time again) and each time they would say that they could not help me becuase the tv warrenty expired (which was bull because the recall said SPECIFICALY that they would honor the repair even if the warrenty was expired) and it went round and round and round and drove me nuts and then they would deny the recall and say there was no such thing and i would have to spell out the URL of SONY's site to them and they would say "oh i guess you are right". STUPID, it was only on sony's site for half a year! and then they said "well this only happens in 1% of the tv's out there" as if insinuating that there was no way in hell i could by LUCKY enough to have a crappy sony tv worthy of a recall. In the end i finaly got them to repair it. It was related to a coolant leak on a projector lens...which could damage some circuit boards...they had to replace all the lenses.

well they did.....well the repair guy shows up at !@!$%!@ 12 midnight almost pics up the tv.....i have to wait about 2 weeks for them to repair it....then the guy returns the tv to me at guess what time....12 MIDNIGHT again!

he shows me the tv and says "everything look ok?" i look at the tv the the context of the white flicker and blue flashes in mind.....little did i realize i should have also inspected the @#$@#$ convergence of the lenses! the ass left the tv there with the lenses totaly out of wack....i did not fully notice this until i played a video game and the colors where out of whack on the corners by almost a centimeter. and i try to get it fixed and guess what....it has been more than 30 days! AND I DONT GET TO HAVE IT FIXED FOR FREE! YAY....they where going to charge me 300 to 400 dollars to reconverge my tv....to fix THIER screwup. uhg....i will never by a sony tv again for the rest of my life! so now i am hear to get the manual and reconverge it myself. it will be hard but i figure i am as technicaly as capable of doing it as any other monkey. why cant sony make the tv bios more HUMAN usable like a GD computer monitor. it's no different just more settings. there is still tilt and pan and pin and all those other settings just like on a computer monitor which does not cost me 400 dollars to tweak.

a simple bit of programming on the tv could ruin the pay of so many tv repairmen out there.

btw,
thanks for posting the manual!

and good luck to all you poor saps who have to deal with this f'ed up sony tv recall. you are going to need it. and learn from my mistakes to make your life happier. 1. save the url of the recall web page incase they give you crap about your warentee or anything else 2. make sure your convergence is good when you get the tv back....any bump will set it out of wack.

Sony projection tv KP46wt500 with red horizonal lines [In reply to] Can't Post

Smile Thanks so all of you I was able to fix the curved red lines on my Sony 46". I took the front of the TV off (very easy), removed the plywood cover, and I turned down the power adjustment on the red (lower right hand knob). The lines disappeared like magic! By the way, the service manual for the kp-46wt500 is found at http://service-asc.sel.sony.com/SonyESI/pdf/99659350.2/manual.pdf.

Re: [Guest] Sony projection tv with blue horizonal lines [In reply to] Can't Post

I can't seem to remove the front panel on my kp51hw-40. I removed the caps and the bottom screws. The bottom wants to come off, but the top seems to still be connected somehow. Is there a trick to removing it, or is there another set of screws that I am missing?

I found two screws on either side that looked like they might be connecting from the rear, but removing them didn't make a difference.
