Re: [daytona235] Sony projection tv with blue horizonal lines [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi everyone,
Just stuimbled upon your site while searching for others having the same problem as me. My Sony KP-57WS500 ($2500.00 original price) is just about fours years old. Six months ago I got the curved hosrizontal lines but thought is was the new DVD player I just bought. Did not seem to notice the blue lines while wathcing tv, mostly around wide screen DVDs. Well, all of a sudden my screen goes kinda pinkish (with no sound) and shuts off after about 4-5 seconds and the red lights starts blinking eight times.
The Authorized Sony Repair up here says it is probably a bad picture tube and that he has had to replace a ton of these on this model. He wants $150.00 to do a service call to my house. My wife and I get the TV loaded onto the snow machine trailer and sercured and take the TV to the dealer and pay him $75.00 to look into the situration (saved us $75.00 so far). He calls back and tells us that the red and blue picture tubes are bad and need to be replaced ($900.00). We say go for it. He calls back and says that maybe we should replace the green tube also since it will probably go bad soon also. We say go for it. He calls back and tell us that Sony no longer even manufactures two of the tubes or a a replacement. ( I guess the original tubes were replaced on Sony TVs soon after Sony found out that they were selling really bad tubes. Mine was the old bad ones. Now we have this $2500.00 dollar TV that we can not fix according to the authorized Sony Repair shop up here in Alaska.
Does anyone think that trying the adjustments listed in this forum might work and get us a few more enjoyable nights before we have to move up to a new set?
Frankly I have kind of had it with Sony products and their whole business model. I bought a sony DVD R/W for my computer. It came with a free 10 song download at their web site. I download a couple of songs and went to put them on a CD to play in my car. Well, Sony's file format is propriotory and would not write to disc (the litature says it would and so does Sony support, but it would not) and the files are not playable on anything except Sony equipment. Thanks, but no thanks.
Their support is bad and I think their products suffer because of it. I too got the tour of India and Pakastan from their support office. Got passed around from tech to tech and had to go thru the whole routine with each one. got disconnected and had to start the whole process over.
This TV thing has me really burned up. Especially afer reading about all the problems on this forum that other people have had. I am glad that the posted suggestions and fixes work for some people. Hope they work for me.
Thanks for the forum and advice everyone.

Re: [nevetS] Sony projection tv with blue horizonal lines [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,

I stumbled upon this thread after I had set up an appointment with a repairman. Luckily they could not come out for a few days. I had the faint blue lines on my 57" rear projection Sony and adjusting the voltage screw worked perfectly (left bottom screw turned counterclockwise). It looks as good as new and I now have a better picture than I had for the last two years. Thanks for this tip. Needless to say I will be canceling the repair call. I probably saved around $300. By the way...I found you could purchase the service manuals on e-bay for about 9.00. This was the lowest price I could find. I have not been able to find a free download for the manual on my KP-57HW40.

Has anyone had problems with the lines recurring after making the adjustment? I would like to know if anyone has gone for 6 months or longer without problems after making the adjustment. Our set was moved several times over the last 6 months, so I think this was out issue and it was out of adjustment. I have heard opinions that the CRT is going bad when this happens and will eventually have to be replaced.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

1 Screw driver, 10 minutes, results-priceless, well the price of a service call anyways.

Those lines were driving me crazy for 2 months.
I had red and green curved lines on a KP-51WS500.

Couple small turns of the bottom right two screws cleared it up.

Looks great.

Thanks again!!!

Re: [apwbe] Sony projection tv with blue horizonal lines [In reply to] Can't Post

THIS IS REALLY MY LAST SONY PRODUCT. IN THE PAST 8 YEARS I HAVE WENT THROUGH 5 RECEIVERS OF SONY. ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO I PURCHASED A 65" SONY WIDESRCEEN MODEL#KP-65WS500. ONE DAY ME AND MY WIFE WAS WATCHING TV WHEN THE TV JUST SHUT OFF. WE THOUGHT THERE WAS A GHOST IN THE HOUSE! AFTER TURNING THE TV BACK ON I DISCOVERED THAT IT HAD BLUE HORIZONTAL LINES ACROSS THE SCREEN. I HAD A SERVICE GUY COME OUT AT A FEE OF $30.00 JUST TO TELL ME THAT THE BLUE PICTURE TUBE HAS GONE BAD AND THAT IT WOULD COST ME $1000.00 TO FIX IT! THESE MOTHER@#$%^&* MUST BE CRAZY! THAT'S 1/4TH OF WHAT I PAID FOR THE TV. MY TV DOESN'T HAVE ANY SCREWS IN THE FRONT LIKE MOST OF THESE FORUM DO. GUESS MINES IS A LATER MODEL?! ANY IDEAS. CALLED SONY AS WELL THEY SAID WE WILL NOT COVER IT............(THAT WAS EXPECTED)! AND YES IT'S FLASHING ABOUT 8 TIMES AS WELL. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!

An update to my problem with Sony. After fighting with Sony over this I guess I finally got to the right person. He explained that they had experienced a percentage of failures because of faulty projection tubes and since Sony does not make the replacement tubes anymore Sony said they would send us a new 55" 3LCD VEGA HDTV for the price of what the repairs would have cost us. It costs us $900.00 to get this new TV and they sent us a really nice glass TV stand with it. It is a nice TV with a beautiful picture. I can also run my computer on it as a giant monitor and it looks great. We did not like having to hack up 900 bucks but we felt it was the only way we were going to get anything and not loose our entire original invenstment we had in a Sony porduct. As far as Sony's business model goes, I still feel the same.

Re: [jschuholz] Sony projection tv with blue horizonal lines [In reply to] Can't Post

I am glad this thread has lasted as long as it has.
Here is an update on my TV (KP51HW40).
Problem: Red horizontal lines, especially visible during black or dark screen. Fixed the issue with a screwdriver just as it is explained in this thread. Worked well for ~6 months and now the red gun, or the red picture tube (whatever you want to call it), is shorted. Basically the TV begins turning red, flickering then shuts off. Had a friendly, very knowledgeable tech come over. He tapped the red gun while the TV was running and it would experience the same symptoms. The convergence also has gone out of whack. So unfortunately this horizontal line is a good indication of which picture tube is likely to go. So if you are experiencing blue horizontal lines, likely your blue gun is going to die, green lines, your green picture tube is nearing it's death. At least that has been my experience.
Bottom line: If you've made the adjustments, great! Enjoy your TV while it lasts, but take it as a warning that the [articular picture tube will die soon. At least that is what my experience has told me.
I will not be buying a SONY again, as I expected it to last longer than the 4 yrs of enjoyment it gave me. Good luck to all!

Re: [ETI] Sony projection tv with blue horizonal lines [In reply to] Can't Post

Your tv set is fixable. The front cover does come off - there are 2 hidden screws near the bottom and at each corner. after removing those the front cover comes off by lifting the bottom out somewhat and pushing down. After the cover is off - U must adjust the blue screen gun.
Best way to do this is
first turn the blue screen knob all the way counterclockwise. turn set on.
Next set the input to an unused input (video4 ?). Now slowly turn it clockwise until U see blue lines. then back off so that there are no lines visible. try this - if still shutting down - back it off some more. After U get it working - U need to reset the error code. (display,5,channel -, power button). reset error codes. U should be go to go. Hope this helps. John

Thank you for posting a summary on how to fix the horizontal line problem. All I did was print out your clear and simple instructions, grabbed a screwdriver, and got to work. In a matter of minutes, I was watching TV again! You saved me $2,500...the price of a similar TV nowadays. You rock!

Anybode else have there tube die shortly after adjusting the screw to get rid if the horizontal lines?
John,
How did you persue the issue further? My red gun seems to have died and the convergence is bad. Very ghostly and "Flash Focus" option will not resolve issue.

Re: [apwbe] Sony projection tv with blue horizonal lines [In reply to] Can't Post

How did you find the right person to get to? Our tv set is only four years old and we are unable to fix it. Originally Sony told us the part was available then when I called to order they said it was no longer made. We have green horizontal lines. I was initially speaking with someone in the Phillipines until I asked for a United States number but have had no luck and getting anyone to respond to inquiries.
Any help or suggestions?
Thanks all.

Hi,

I read this post and I was amazed how simple it was to fix my TV but after a few month it came back and I was referred to a tech support site which help me a lot, they have a free live chat so you can actually speak with real expert. He told me which part I need and how to fix it.

Here is the page for the Sony KP-51WS500 Support:

Good luck

Re: [jkraemer] Sony projection tv with blue horizonal lines [In reply to] Can't Post

Everyone,
I have been having the same problem with the arched lines on my 57 inch sony for a few months. I was about to call a repair man, but thanks to reading everones ideas I have saved from $50 to $150. Now to help others who may still be looking for help. I was not able to down load any manuals, but from reading through all the posts I was able to get rid of my lines. Her is the procedure:
1. Remove the 5 screws on each side of the TV just behind the speakers. There are 10 total five on each side.
2. The entire front comes off as one piece. Once all the screws are removed give the entire front that is below the picture a good firm tug in a DOWN and out move. Don't be afraid to pull on it. There are some male/female groves along the top of the coverplate where it slides into where the screen is located. (This was the hardest part of the process. I was afraid to crack the plastic, but don't worry. It will come off just fine.
3. Once you have removed the plactic front cover, you will see the small ractangle piece of plywood with four screws. Remove the screws and the sheet of wood. This will expose the adjustment nobs.
4. As one of the previous post had mentioned there will be 6 nobs. The ones on the top do not need to be touched.
5. Make very small adjustments to the three nobs on the bottom. Depending on your problem you may only have to adjust one or two of the nobs. Remember as stated by a previous post. If you move them to fast or too much it will shut off the TV. If this happens, simply unplug it for a few minutes and start over.
6. This should have solved the problem in about a half of a second. There were a few other mentions in previous post about the problem coming back and people eventually calling out a repair man. When he got to their house, the only thing he did was tap on the tubes and charge $50. So, I do not know if I will or will not have this problem, but while I had the front cover off. I taped on my tubes very gently. This is of course optional and may or may not be needed by me or you.
I hope this helps someone. I know reading through all the posts solved my problem. My TV is playing like new again.

Thanks to all who contributed to this discussion. I just found this forum yesterday as I was trying to decide whether to call the TV repairman or not. My warranty just ran out on my Sony KP57WV600 and I was getting the blue retrace lines. Good thing I found this site! It took me only 15 minutes to have my TV looking like new again! I will say I was a little nervous about removing that front panel. As stated before, you really have to be forceful with it and it pops right off. Thanks everyone!

Hi all. I have had a 65 inch Sony rear projection TV for 4 years. Had the blue line problem from about the time that it went out of warrentee.

Seems the screws on mine are not accessible from the front.

Pain.

Re: [Incitatus] Sony projection tv with blue horizonal lines [In reply to] Can't Post

OK, here is the deal ...

I have a kp65wv600. To remoce the plastic facing over the front you need to remove 3 screws/side that are facing the back. Can't do it unless you can get behind the monster.

Again, touch on the lower left control and ... PRESTO.

I screwed around with all of the controls on the bottom and got the picture back better than it was by putting the convergence grid up and adjusting.

A bit more than 10 minutes (because of the screws) but a very simple fix for a problem that had been bugging me for a couple years.

I tried to get an "Authorized" tech some time ago and the guy wanted to charge me over $100 just to come over. I am glad that I am basically a cheap sobWink

All's well as they say.

Thank you all for your help.

Great thread.I had the same issue with my Sony KP-65WV700 with Red Lines. Fortunately I had purchased a 5 year warranty and the repair man came and did what people have described here. This was about a month ago. Well now all of a sudden the picture now has a color separation issue where everything in the picture has a halo of Red Blue and Green around it. TV is still under Warranty and a repair will be coming out but wanted to find out if anyone else has had this problem and what exactly is wrong, ie, is the picture tube gone?
