Toshiba -touch focus error Can't Post

Hello all, great site!
I have a Toshiba 50hdx82. If I press the touch focus button on the front of the set, I get the touch focus error. Does this mean my convergence chips are going bad? My picture has been looking bad lately. I called the cable tech out and he checked my HD DVR cable box and said it was working fine. Must be the tv. The HD picture looks washed out and not real clear. I went into the service mode to try a 56 pt. convergence but it didn't look to bad. What I did notice was the following service mode didn't look right:
SCNT = 11H = B & W - dark looking.
SCOL = OCH = dark reddish blurry picture.
TNTC = 48H = Dark red blurry picture.
No matter how much I changed the settings on these bottom two, the picture didn't change.
Any help here would be greatly appreciated!

You mention service menu parameters.

I'm sure you're aware of an old lawyers' saying that a man who represents himself will have a fool for a client.

Hello,
I have alot of experience in electroics just not tv's. I have been lurking on this site for a while and have noticed two things about you. One, you seem very knowledgeable
about TV repair. Two, It seems you try to be fuuny and make sarcastic remarks that are not needed or helping anyone. Don't mean to offend you but if you don't know the answer to a question someone post on this board then how about not replying at all. People posting here are no doubt doing so because their set is broke and they don't have the money to call in a repair guy or buy a new one. They/we are under enough stress without someone making dumbass snide comments that most don't understand anyway. Either put up or shut up. Thanks you for your time!

Apparently your "lurking" & reading did not sink in .....Unsure...
IF you hadn't noticed by now that jts1957's humor is a bit different , you NEVER will....Frown.....
As far as his saying these 2 statements;=>....

YOU said NOT ONE DAMN word about your background....PERIOD !!!!.....Mad.....

Factory Menus are for EXPERIENCED TV Tech's ONLY !!!...PERIOD....Angelic....
From what I read in your first post , I would have thought the SAME EXACT thing & you were one of them.....

KEEP in mind that jts1957 DID ask the following;=>....
"""And your background in electronics repair is?Unimpressed """....
He wants to know what your background is BEFORE HE OR any other tech can determine what level you & your problem need to be addressed....
IF you had LITTLE or NO experience & you messed with Factory settings , as far as I'm concerned , hit the road , jack...Mad.....
Another old saying that fits here;=>...

EVERYBODY on this forum , in this country & MANY other countries are under some stress of one kind or another...
No need to teach us about that....
As far as "Either put up or shut up"" goes , if you continue to chide techs here , some (probably a lot) will just "shut up" for fear of being chided afterwards....
So I wouldn't expect too much favorable replies....

GOOD LUCK......

BTW:=>...."electroics"= electronics....."fuuny"= funny.....
So you see , no one's PERFECT ....Wink....
PLEASE don't use "TYPO" as an excuse...
That's what "Preview Post" is for....

billyboy;......

Now that things seem to be smoothed over , back to our regularily scheduled programing...

Since jts1957 has , for now at least , not followed up with any further questions , (I hope he doesn't mind if I do) I'll try to help you out as best as I can....
For now , STAY OUT of the "Service Mode" UNLESS I SAY SO....OK ???...
You said;=>..."""My picture has been looking bad lately...
The HD picture looks washed out and not real clear."""
Let's start there....
What I'm going to suggest is that you remove the front screen....
Then with the TV on , you need to take a look down into each colored lens at the picture....
This WILL be a somewhat bright pix so kinda creep up on it to allow time for your eyes to adjust...
Start with the Red CRT....The pix there should be bright , clear & in focus....
Next look at the green & blue CRTs...
They MUST match the red as far as bright , clear & focus goes...
They "may" be somewhat cloudy & blurry....
Post back with what the results are....Thanks...
IF you need any further assistance with the above , post & I'll give you more detailed info....
IF we need pix , can you take & post them ?????
It might be a good idea to see what exactly you are talking about....

GOOD LUCK....

Re: [Ron.M] Toshiba -touch focus error [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Ron, (aka the peacemaker)Wink
Well I got my picture looking a lot better now. I got a new cable box/dvr. I ended up only enabling 480i & 1080i in the cable box's setup and for some reason that seemed to make a big difference. As I mentioned earlier, I've done alot of lurking and reading here and other cites, so I know my way around that service menu somewhat. I did a 56 pt. convergence and that seemed to go ok. The only question I have now is about those two settings that I mentioned earlier. SCOL and TNTC. First what does each one stand for or control and 2) If they both look dark red and blurry how can my picture look half descent? Thanks!

billyboy;.....

From your 1st post;=>...
""" I called the cable tech out and he checked my HD DVR cable box and said it was working fine.""""

From your last post:=>....
"""I got a new cable box/dvr."""

Apparently the cable tech ain't so much a tech as they are salesmen....
No matter , it apparently solved your problem....Laugh....

SCNT = Sub CONtrast....Adjusts contrast...
SCOL = Sub COLor....Adjusts color level....
TNTC = TiNT Centering (Control) (?).....Not too sure about this one....I think this one centers the tint control range...(Flesh tones)...
These 3 & others set values for "customer" levels in the consumer menu...
You said;=>..
""""If they both look dark red and blurry how can my picture look half descent?""""
It's been awhile since I worked on this type of Toshiba , but , (& I don't have the Service Manual for this TV) methinks there's more to just changeing the values....
I think you have to enter them some way for them to take effect....
Anyways , IF the pix looks as good as you say it is , why fix something that apparently ain't broke ????
OR mess with the "Factory Menu" that can get you into trouble ????...
IF you insist on messing with Factory settings , one piece of advice;=>...ALWAYS WRITE down the ITEM & VALUES BEFORE you dick with them...
That way you have a way to restore to original values in case there's a screw-up....
Keep in mind that there ARE some adjustments that ARE IRREVERSIBLE & you can easily screw it up FOREVER....

Anything else ????.....

If not , GOOD LUCK & enjoy the TV....

& you're Welcome....Sly....

Hi Ron,
Yes, I wrote down the original settings in the service menu a long time ago. The picture isn't bad but it could be better. Its just these two settings,
"SCNT = Sub CONtrast....Adjusts contrast...
SCOL = Sub COLor....Adjusts color level.... "
As I said, dark reddish and appears slightly blurry. It doesn't make sense. I would think these settings would show the picture on the screen as it appears. I have the service manual and will check it out again. Hard to explain. The picture seems clear but has a slight haze to it or something.

billyboy;....

Lets do a little review here...

In regards to;...

"""The picture seems clear but has a slight haze to it or something"""".
Did you;=>...

"""What I'm going to suggest is that you remove the front screen....

The service manual should give info about removing the front screen....

& Can you;=>...
IF we need pix , can you take & post them ?????
It might be a good idea to see what exactly you are talking about..<<This may help a lot.....

""""2) If they both look dark red and blurry how can my picture look half descent?""""
Still trying to figure this one out.....

Where did you get the Service manual from ????
I've tried to find a free download without any success....Unsure....
It may help me a lot in helping you.....Laugh....
Take a look in the Service Menu & manual for an item listed as "SBRT"...
This should be right where SCNT & SCOL are & means Sub BRighT...
PLEASE do not adjust it without writing down the value first....
Experiment & see if that helps the pix quality any....
Do NOT set it TOO bright as it may cause protect circuits to kick in & shut the set down....
You may have a problem resetting that value IF that happens....

Please post results & answer ALL questions...THANKS...

GOOD LUCK.....Smile...

Hi Ron,
I've had the screen off and cleaned the lenses and the screen. I don't think taking a picture would really show anything. I'm going to hook my HD set top box back up and see what the picture looks like to compare and make sure that my dvr cable box isn't the problem. I'll ssee if I can't you a copy of that service manual. Later.

NO OFFENSE , billyboy; just a whimsical reply to jts1957....Wink...

I think I'd been a whole lot better off as a dentist....
You get instant respect , mixed in with a certain degree of fear of what he's going to do to you....(ROOT CANAL....Mad.)
Pulling teeth is a lot easier that getting results from some people here....
Once again, NO OFFENSE , billyboy...Wink...
And the money IS better....NO house calls...NO lugging in heavy TVs...Etc.
And you get to rip off the government for a nice retirement package...
(There's pro's & con's in ALL trades, NOBODY gets off scott free)
But then again , I don't think I'd like sitting on a stool looking into somebody's ugly @$$ mouth full of bad teeth is my cup of tea...
So while I might have been better off as a dentist , I wouldn't have liked the work as much as I do doing what I'm doing now....

billyboy;.....

THANKS for the manual....You can delete the link if you choose to do so....

You said;=>....""""As I said, dark reddish and appears slightly blurry. It doesn't make sense.""""
Try the adjustment for BRTC (Sub-Brightness) on page 12 of the service manual....
Have the customer brightness set at mid-range BEFORE you go in & set the
"Factory" BRTC...
Carefull as to how high you set that as the TV "may" go into shutdown protect mode...
TNTC IS for Sub-Tint (Centering) as I said...See page 19 , Table 2.....
If you need help adjusting that one as it does not say how to do it in
the manual , just post....Be glad to show you how....

Have fun....Sly....
