Toshiba 42h81 won't turn on Can't Post

Hi all. My problem started with the blue being out of convergence, but escalated into the tv not turning on. The tv had the symptom of bad convergence ICs. The blue was separated from the red and green. The touch focus gave a "touch focus error" message. So I went to www.audiolabga.com and ordered 2 chips for $12 each. I was going to get the $6 ones from www.electronix.com, but people seemed to advise against those on here. Anyways, I disconnected all the wires from both boards (including the high voltage) wires before realizing that I only needed to get the convergence board out. So I put the HV wires back and took out the convergence board. I had my friend solder the new chips on (he has soldered many times and is much better than I am).

After I got the board home, I connected everything into the proper places, although this was from memory as I did not take very good pictures. While I'm on this subject, is there a 5-wire connector the connects to P113 on the convergence board? I had no connectors to connect there, and I don't remember if one was there before I disconnected the board.

After everything was connected, I plugged in the tv and...nothing. No click of the relay. So I disconnected a few wires, reconnected them, and plugged it in again. This time I got the sound of the relay. I looked and the screen and it was this horrible mess of colors and lines. I could not make out anything. On top of this, the remote control would not even turn off the tv. I manually turned off the tv and tried to turn it on with the remote. Nothing. So I turned it back on manually and started disconnecting and reconnecting wires (stupid thing to do with power going to the boards). Last thing I remember is hearing a click (I think it was the relay). Now all the happens when turning on the tv is the red light turns on and the relay clicks. Nothing else. Crazy

Anybody have any ideas of what I might have damaged? I should have gotten the service manual before attempting any of this, but I didn't. By the way, does anybody have the service manual in pdf I could have? Thanks.

If you incorrectly installed the board back into the set and applied power it's really hard to say what Might have happened. It could be something a simple as plugs not in the correct connector with no damage done to plugs in the wrong connector with lots of damage done. Trying to figure this out over the internet is nearly impossible. If you take it to a shop then the poor tech is going to have to figure out what you screwed up and that's going to cost you.

This is a perfect example of why laymen shouldn't be messing around trying to fix their own TV's.

While I agree with you that a tech is most likely going to have to figure out what's wrong, that same "poor tech" gave me a quote of $250 to change two chips. I knew the risks of trying to fix my tv, but I wanted to learn something and have read many success stories. I do not regret what I did. I am not an auto mechanic but have saved hundreds of dollars repairing my own car. If someone wants to attempt to save an absurd amount by doing their own repairs and fully knows the risks involved, I say go for it. I for one like to attempt to fix things for my own knowledge. Sometimes it works out and saves me money and increases my knowledge. Sometimes, like this time, it doesn't work out and ends up costing me more money -- but I still gain knowledge.

So does anybody out there know if anything is supposed to be connected to P113? Thanks.

For $5.50, I ordered the service manual and schematic. I diagnosed the STR-Z4369 as being bad. I ordered that for $20 with shipping; everything works and looks great now! So for a total of $65.50 (which is less than what the "poor tech" would have charged me just for a diagnosis), I repaired the tv myself.

This is a perfect example of how laymen can save an outrageous amount of money by "messing around trying to fix their own TV's".

Yep I am one of those "Poor Techs" just out to make a livin' And in better shape than the guy in our town who just wanted to save a little cash and work on his Big ass Sony himself because our quote was a little high. Luckly he was a vetren because once the Crt anode lead got ahold of him because he didn't know better. The VA here in town provided a nice funeral for his famly at a price a regular funeral home would have oviousaly overcharged for
