Zenith 44" Rear-Projection LCD TV E44W46LCD Can't Post

Am I the only one looking at this TV? So far it seems only Best Buy carries it. I like its slick design and cheap price. However, I couldn't find any reviews on this TV anywhere on the web, even on Zenith's website. It looks like a discontinued model...... Help!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks,

Re: [lcdtv] Zenith 44" Rear-Projection LCD TV E44W46LCD [In reply to] Can't Post

I bought the Zenith 44 lcd e44246lcd at bb last month and like it . I got the samsung 841 dvi player to use dvi out and my cable company [charter] just offered hd in my area using the explorer 3250 hd box. I connect with this only using component out. when you set up the cable box if you tell it that your set only recieves 1080i or 720p it will upconvert everything to either setting. many of the regular 480i channels look outstanding upconverted to 1080i or 720p! The hd channels all look outstanding. I have stunned several people with the quality of regular tv then switched to hd to blow their minds. but some channels with poor signal sources look no better. The dvd dvi out again allows upconversion to 720p or 1080i and newer dvd's look great upconverted [they also look great at 480p]. regarding "greenish" tint issues. I think that this has more to do with lcd rptv technology. projection lcd is weak with blacks and greys , dlp is superior in this area. lcd is cheaper and may show bright day time colors with more accuracy i.e. less harshness better mixing. Thus Master and commander on dvd looks poor when it is shot in fog in the night , there is greenish blotching in the dark grey black fog shots. that would be a good test dvd to bring into a store. I suspect that a dlp set would look better. I never considered that this might be because of the dvi out , will have to try connecting the dvd player with component out to compare. Bright colored dvd'd like the 5th element look outstanding on the 44" zenith. The set looks best when viewed from 8 to 12 feet away. if you are much closer you should concider a direct view crt tube tv. I used the sound&vision home theater tune-up My settings are: contrast=60; brightness=60; color=70; sharpness=40; tint=r5. [the test dvd suggests tint at 0 but it looks better to me with r5 and less color] I set it at medium or cool. because the native resolution is 720p I thought that all upconversions would look best at that resolution however upconverting normal 480i channels may look a little better at 1080I?? My best explanation for this may be that this set may make a 1080I picture by projecting 2 alternating 540p pictures and it may have an easer time with this upconversion. overall I like this tv and am happy with the purchase.

Re: [lcdtv] Zenith 44" Rear-Projection LCD TV E44W46LCD [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm new to HD and HT, and I bought this set yesterday. Very happy so far.

Comcast HD box comes on Saturday, so....

1. Is there a menu setting on the TV I should change prior to hooking it up to the box so that I see everything in the highest resolution possible?

2. How do I know what resolution (480i, 720, 1080, et al) I'm seeing on DVDs and is there an adjustment I should make to ensure I'm seeing them at the highest possible resolution? (I'm using component in from the DVD and have it set to "progressive").

3. Is there a setting on the Comcast HD box that I should set to make sure it's feeding the highest resolution?

4. Or, do I just hook everything up and assume that it defaults to "best resolution" on every thing (DVDs, HD, standard cable, et al).

5. Last, should I use DVI or component video in for the Comcast box?

Thanks in advance -- great thread -- I wouldn't have bought this TV without it!

Hi,

I bought this TV a couple of months ago and love it. I hope I can answer your questions:

1. No. As long as your using the Component or DVI inputs.

2. A progressive scan DVD player will not give you the best resolution :( . The DVD player with the best resolution is an UPCONVERTING progressive scan (with a Fouradja chip). A p-scan DVD player will display in 480p, but an upscaling player will "fill in the missing lines" and convert the signal to 720p (our TVs won't show 1080i).

Will this look like an HD broadcast signal? No.

It will be a big improvement over the 480p of p-scan players, though.

The player that I recommend is a Zenith DVB318 DVD player. It can be had for $200 or less, and it comes with a DVI cable. If you do a search in AVS forums, you will find that this is a very popular player, even with people who have $10,000+ HT systems!

3. Yes. Your installer will probably set it for you, but he will probably set it wrong. With the power off, hit the "Menu" button. It will bring up a white colored setup page. You should set the setting to:

16x9 screen size

1080i output, not 720p (I know what your thinking, but to me this looks better. You can play with this setting if you like. BTW, the same goes for the upscaling DVD player. 1080i output mode looks better than 720p, see for yourself.)

480p output override (to me at least, try the other seetings and you decide.)

4. NEVER!

5. To me the DVI gives a crisper image than component. I use it for the cable box. If you watch more DVDs than TV, you may want to use it for the DVD player (not the case for me).

Good Luck!

Wow, what a great site. This is my first time buying a REALLY nice TV. I'm building a home and I must get my TV dimensions to my contractor because we are looking to have the TV inset into the fireplace chimney above the hearth. They wanted to have it fit exactly but if I were to do that I would assume a fan with vent would be best to keep the back of the set cool? A rep at BB said to leave an inch on each side? Current price at my BB was $1898 and no one said anything about any deals? Earlier in the thread I saw where someone said the picture from a high or low setting was bad, what have others seen? I'm also looking to setup a full home theater using this TV with wall mounted speakers and whatever other equipment I might need. Suggestions of how others are using this TV is very much appreciated. If anyone has a lead on a good home theater company in the St. Louis area I'd like to hear.

Thanks

my tv is located in a custom made cabinet - 43" wide - I have about 3/4 of an inch on each side of the tv. I'd say the bottom of the tv is probably about 2 1/2 feet off the ground.

I bought the majority of my surround sound system (Onkyo reciever, Infinity speakers) at crutchfield.com. They have a lot of deals and usually free shipping. I bought my sub (Velodyne) at CC.

Having had the set for a week my judgements on it need to be taken with a grain of sand. First off we paid 1600 for it (damn good deal) also bought the Monster HTS 1000 MkII Power center/ signal filter and have seen nothing of the green effects (so im thinking it may have to do with a signal ground problem) Cartoons are awesome sports are great havent checked out any porn but hell you dont care about quality of pic with those hehehehehhehe. I will be getting HDTV. Oh and im running Dish network Sat provider. The only problem im having so far is programming the remote with the echostar settings (wont really worry about it till i get the HD receiver) And soon i will take my comp and see what HL2 Doom3 Farcry look in 44 inch glory (ok 38 1\4" glory). And just a thought but for surround sound system Logiteks z-680 speaker system is being sold at tigerdirect ( http://www.tigerdirect.com/...919&Sku=L23-6182 )for 199 i spent 299 when i got them and they do a fine job ( THX Dolby and DTS certified) with 188W RMS sub woofer 62 Watts RMS per channel for satellites; 69 Watts RMS for center channel. However if you do descide to go with this system some good quality speaker wire is recommended as bescause the wire that comes with the system is of good quality it is however short.

This is the first HD set I will be hooking up, what is the best way to hook it to a HD digital cable box (Cox) and a DVD player to get the best picture from this TV. I am not sure about the DVI, verses the composite hook ups, ect.

I'll take any advice on this, Thanks.

Re: [bully] Zenith 44" Rear-Projection LCD TV E44W46LCD [In reply to] Can't Post

I hooked the Zenith E44W46LCD up last night to a COX HD cable box thru the DVI inputs, and love the HD channels.

My question is why does the TV not display a full picture on non HD channels (and some of the HD network channels) no matter which aspect ratio I choose. Is this normal.

While viewing my regular (non HD) channels after I hooked it up, and selecting 4:3, 16:9, horizon, zoom1 and zoom2, each one will change the display, but none will utilize the entire screen width.

The only channels that will are a few of the HD channels, (DiscoveryHD, PBSHD, INHD). These automatically use the 16:9 widescreen and look great. The network HD channels I receive thru COX were not filling the entire screen, even If I selected 16:9. They also had the black bars on the sides.

I can't believe this nice big screen will only display most channels using only about 2/3 of the screen.

Please help.

To RFALGOUT:

Try going into your cable box settings, it might have a section were you set how the box displays each channels cable signal. My TV had that problem but I changed the default 4:3 the box had to 6:9. Now I have both my TV and my box set at 6:9 and everything stretches to the full size.

Falgout- not every channel on HD channels are broadcast in HD - that is why you have the black borders on the side sometimes.

I have the Cox Motorola box with the DVR. I can goto settings for the box and choose 720p stretch or 1080i stretch. See if your HD box has those options.

I checked the TV and cable cox last night to try everything I could to stretch it to full screen on the non HD channels (which is almost all of the channels I get thru Cox), and it cannot be done. There are only a few true HD channels that will go full screen.

I have the motorola Cox HD box (no DVR), and there are no options in the menu settings for any changes to the screen size. The only changes I can find are on the TV itself (by changing the different aspect ratios).

Please let me know if anyone else is having this same problem of having black side bars on all the non HD channels.

If you have the Motorola DCT5100 (or other moto???) turn off the Cable box but leave ON the TV. press the menu button on the HDTV cable BOX. This will put you into the screen where you can select your aspect ratio... Hope that is of some help.

This is because those CHANNELS don't have HD programming all the time. It has nothing to do with the box or cable company or TV. You will notice that the CBS evening news will be 4x3, but CSI will be in 16x9 because CSI is broadcast in HD, the news is not.

Tha CHANNEL puts in the black (or grey) bars as part of the broadcast. The TV assumes that they are part of the 16x9 picture, therefore any ratio adjustmets will be made as if the bars were part of the picture.

This happens to all HD cable boxes and TVs. It will always happen until the the HD channels broadcast in 100% HD.

How do you have yours set? Thanks again

I have a neighbor who has the same Cox service as I do, but a plasma widescreen HD. He can change his TV display so that the black bars are not visable while watching SD channels. Every channel can be viewed full screen.

So it is definately a TV or cable box setting that is used to zoom or eliminate these bars. There is no reason to buy a TV this size if the majority of the channels that you will view with it will use only 2/3 of the screen.

I thought that you could only not stretch the HD channels, but you could already stretch the SD???

The cable box should probably be set to 480p 4x3 setting (instead of "strech". This will alow you to stretch the screen with the Zenith "ratios" button rather than through the cable box. I guess it doesn't matter which way you do it, but I would rather change the TV settings than the cable box settings.

I personally can't stand stretching SD because it is so out of proportion, and I watch SD about 5% of the time (I'd rather settle for HD ANYTHING over SD).

When I first got the set I thought I would watch alot of SD, but this is not the case.

BTW, you should have the display output on the cable box set to 1080i not 720p. This is because the TV has a better downscaler than the cable box.

Bgoof, Thank for the information, it helped alot.

I went home and accessed the menu on my Cox box. I have the new Motorola DCT6200, but the menu still came up the same way. I set the TV size to 16:9, the DVI output to 1080i, and turned the 4:3 overide on.

The 4:3 overide allowed my to eliminate the black side bars by selecting 16:9 on the TV remote on all channels on the TV, except the few HD channels that are not full screen. This is how it should be.

Here is a quote from the COX website about burn in by not eliminating the side bars on the SD channels.

Avoiding Sidebar or Letterbox Damage (Burn-In)
  • Persistent viewing of programs with sidebars or letterboxing over long periods of time may degrade the picture quality of your HDTV by reducing your HDTV’s ability to display colors evenly across the screen.
  • Both the television manufacturers and Cox recommend that sidebars be eliminated by using the zoom feature whenever possible. (Since letterboxing is done by the content provider, letterboxed programs cannot always be completely zoomed to fill the screen.)
  • Pausing DVD’s or videos for extended periods of time can also cause burn-in.
  • Cox will not be held responsible for any burn-in on your HDTV set.

The chance of burn-in on RP-LCD TVs is close to zero. RP-CRTs have a high risk of burn in. I believe Cox is covering their ass. I suggest you watch TV with whatever ratio you like, and don't worry about burn-in.

On the rare event that I use a stretching format. I use "Zoom 2". The proportions seem the most realistic and the loss of the top and bottom of the picture isn't that dramatic.

This really isn't specific to this TV, but if I have two coaxial cables ran to my tv box, can I have one go through the digital cable box and connect that box to the tv via DVI, then have the other coax cable go straight to the coax input of the TV to have PIP? My point is that I keep hearing you can't do PIP if you are using a digital cable box. Is my scenario the work around? Anyone???

thnx
