magnovox rear proj. color out of adjustment Can't Post

I have a 1995 magnavox FP4620W101 rear projection TV that I got for free, there was barely any picture at all, possibly to another ammiture messing with the enternal controlls, but be that as it may; I tore into the back cavity and found the familiar color adjustments and blindly started turning them up to increase the brightness of the colors! I had no business messing with those adjustments, but that is done over with and, well now the picture (brightness) comes in much better but I cant seem to tone the colors to an acceptible level, mainly there is too much red, and when I try to turn the red down the picture is too dim...I would like to know if there is any way to adjust the color dials inside the tv so I could determine if (based on reading some of these forums) the bulbs or the coolant needs replacing. This is my first question on any forum and I would greatly appreciate any kind of responce...THANKS Unsure

""""Ron.m I see your replies on alot of the questions here, i ask the u
please look at my inquiry here on april 4th, please give me any kind of feed back.
Thank you very much.""""

I'll try my best....Smile....

1st , let's clear up a few things....
You said:=>.."""I had no business messing with those adjustments,""""
100% correct.....Wink....

"""but that is done over with """
NOT neccessarily....Unsure....

"""I would like to know if there is any way to adjust the color dials

forums) the bulbs or the coolant needs replacing.""""
Those adjustments are NOT the way to check the coolant....
You'll be happy to know that the CRTs (bulbs) used in the older
Magnavox projection TVs were of GOOD quality & last a long time....
So the odds of you haveing a bad CRT is VERT slim....
More than likely , it's a coolant problem....

IF you had just read the post ahead of the request you made in
"badgereye's" thread , the info to check the condition of CRT coolant is there....Wink....

Link;=>...
http://www.tv-forums.com/...cgi?post=68967#68967
Scroll down past the pix & you'll see it.....

Here it is modified for your use;=>....

To verify your coolant is bad , do the following;=>...
What you need to do is remove the front screen assembly....
If you need info as to how to safely remove the screen, post back & I'll help as
best as I can....
After you have the screen off the TV , turn it on...
Look directly first into the red CRT lens assembly at the face of the tube
where the picture should be....
Kinda creep up on it as the pix WILL be bright & you need time for your eyes to adjust...
You should see a clear , sharp & focused picture....
Next , look into the green CRT lens assembly....
There you "may" see a bit of contamination in the coolant....
You should see a picture there , but probably not as good as the red....
Now look into the blue CRT lens assembly....
I'll bet that one is a mess....Cloudy & a lot of junk in there...
A LOT of contamination & the pix will be hard to make out....
IF that is the case , then what you need is a coolant change...
IF they are fairly clear pix on ALL 3 CRTs , then you may have a different problem....

Let me/us know what you find....OK....

Three questions;=>...
#1=How much electronic/TV repair background experience do you have ????...<<<VERY
IMPORTANT you answer this one HONESTLY !!!...

#2=Just out of curiousity , what part of the world do you live in ????...
You don't have to answer this one if you don't want to....
#3=Are you able to take & post pix in case we need them ????

Have a Very Happy Easter , IF you so choose....Laugh....

Re: [Ron.M] magnovox rear proj. color out of adjustment [In reply to] Can't Post

i have next to no experience, i just enjoy taking things apart and usualy i can figure out what the problem is...i know that tv's have a compasitor that caries very high voltage so i wont be messing around with the circutry. I am an electrician by trade, but that sure doesnt make me an electronic repair tech!Wink
I live in Kentucky, close to lexington.
I realy appreciate you responding to my questions, and have actualy read where you have posted that solution for checking the quality of the fluid in a couple post...but where is the "bladder" that holds the fluid and whats the best method for removing the old fluid? i sae a post where you show the screws to be carful of, or we could make a real mess but if you could run it by me 1 time please? I do hope its the fluid, i have priced the bulbs and their very expensive! Thanx a BUNCH! Happy Easter

Thanks for your speedy reply & honesty....
We are going to do this one thing at a time so let's not get ahead of ourselves....Wink....

Check the fluids first & we'll worry about "bladders" , removing fluids ,etc later....OK....

IF you think you can handle this job , post back & I'll give you
info on the coolant...

On the label where you found the model# is a DPTV #...

SORRY about the delay....Unsure....
Doing a lot of research for your TV & a couple of others....
Let's start with ordering the coolant....
Now , you will NOT be changring the red CRT coolant , just the green & blue CRTs....
So we only need enough coolant for 2 CRTs....
2 sources that I found.....
MCM IS trustworthy & reliable...
The other one is use at your own risk....

MCM;=>....

http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/20-4275

16 oz bottle is $9.49 +s&h......You NEED 2 bottles...

http://www.newark.com/techspray/1915-16sq/crt-coolant-
projection-tv-heat/dp/95K6573

$8.99 +s&h...You'll need 2 bottles here also....
Email this one if you decide to order from them & find out IF they have 2 or more bottles in stock....
They're only showing 2 in stock & that's VERY low stock for such a popular item....

That should get you started....
I will be back in a day or 2 .....
I'm trying to find an excellent step by step proceedure that has detailed info & pix.....
I misplaced the link info....

Till then....Sly....

Re: [Ron.M] magnovox rear proj. color out of adjustment [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm sorry Ron for the misunderstanding, I was reading threw the forum and I ran across an old post that some guy had only 1 reply to and it was on the 3rd or 4th page so I wanted to try to get his post back to the front of the forum so hopefully someone of your experience and knowledge would take notice and possibly help/respond to him. He only had 1 reply and that reply was far from being helpful... I in no way meant for that to be directed towards you, or any one for that matter!
But did you get the question that I posted for you? About the picture messing up?

I see now that my question to you Ron did not post!Unsure I was in a hurry this morning and apparently pushed the wrong button. But I do learn from my mistakes and will be more careful in the future!

I have been watching my TV while waiting for the coolant and it seems to have started a new problem!Unsure
While watching it, the screen suddenly go very dark, this only last for 1 second or less.
Also normally the TV displays in full screen picture but every 5 minutes or so it will jump to what resembles wide screen view (4 or 5 inches of the top and bottom screen disappears) and the whole picture seems to adjust to the change. This also only last for 1/2 second or so...I have changed sources to make sure it was not a problem with my DVD player but unfortunately it is still doing this with both my DVD played and Digital converter box. Does this sound as bad to you as it does to me?

Thank you Ron for your knowledge and speedy response!! Cool

Yours Truly

robertlanham79;.....

1st off , you shouldn't worry about other peoples threads....
They know about what is or isn't happening with their threads...
That thread is ONLY 1 or 2 days old....
NO NEED for you OR anyone else to go in & post UNLESS you are going to help with his/her problem....
That WASN'T helping....Sorry....

Your 'new' TV problem "may" /"may not" be an adjustment in the customer menu....
I'm refering to the "wide screen" & NOT the going "dark" problem...
However , I'm NOT going to be able to help you with either one....
Your lack of TV/electronic experience is the reason....
IF after you change the coolant , you see the dramatic improvement & you like the set a lot , it would probably be a good idea to call a reputable TV repair service shop for a "free" estimate....

Good Luck...

robertlanham79;.....

Just to clarify a few things here.....

I am NOT a Forum "God" here....
I have NO authority to tell anyone what to do OR NOT to do....
I am just a retired TV tech trying to help others with their problems....
I post on other threads & comment when I think I need to....
However , I do NOT post to "bump" other threads up in line....
That seems to me that it could cause a problem with the thread starter ,
who may or may not want that kind of uninvited help(?)....
IF he/she sees their thread is not getting the kind of attention they
feel it deserves , then let them "bump" it up....
IF you feel you can help someone , by ALL means post it !!!!....

OK .....School's out...Time for recess.....Wink.....

Have a GREAT day......
