50" Pioneer Plasma w/ PDP-AR05U receiver. Seen this problem?

Any suggestions welcome here.
Friend gave me this Plasma after upgrading. All cables, etc. seem to be intact.
When I connect it and power everything up, the plasma flashes from green (power) to red (standby), for a few seconds.
When the receiver is powered on, there is a flash/ temporary brightening of the screen for a second, then nothing. Then the plasma reverts back to the green/red cycle.
On the receiver, it goes back into standby mode.
My questions, is... Where do I start here? Is this a problem with the Plasma? Or the receiver? How can I test or troubleshoot either one independently.
This is my first post, so pardon my ignorance, and any suggestions, links, etc. would be greatly appreciated.
