Sounds very much like you've blown the power supply. Certain vintage Sony projection sets are well known for making a loud 'pop' as the PS dies. This is usually due to shorted convergence ICs. It will require a qualified technician to repair both circuits.

"Guest" is right. Sony projection sets are notorious for shorted convergence IC's... the symptom usually is that the set will turn on, HV will come up, then the set will shut down. If that's the case, shorted convergence IC's.

The other possibility is that the HV anodes are arcing, which can be cured with a generous serving of RTV! Of course (if this is the case) the HOT is probably shorted. If you take it to a shop and they tell you the HOT is shorted, make sure they seal the HV anodes, or the set will fail again.
