Aiwa portable problem

I have an Aiwa TV/VHS combi which is working fine until I plug a lead into the RCA sockets. The TV picture and then sound cuts out as soon as I plug the leads in (even without the DVD plugged in at the other end). The DVD plays fine when I use it, but if I want to view TV channels I have to disconnect the leads.
I can't see a button on the remote to change input channels (it seems to be an automatic switch to DVD).
Does anybody have any ideas as to what is happening?
