CTC167R Pincushion problem Can't Post

Picture has an hourglass that extends 3 inches at the center

I have checked CR 401,403,404
All caps in the '400' section look good

Any suggestions? I do not have a schematic.

Thanks in advance!

buffalocomputer;....
I do not have a schematic either...& to my chagrin , my CTC169 is corrupted !!!....Mad...
However , if memory serves , there's a 820 mfd , 200 vdc cap that comes off the power supply bridge that when it goes bad will give you an extreme hour glass pix....
It'll be a large can....

GOOD LUCK....

That is the cap,but it >looks< to be in good shape. A power supply component could affect pincushion?

GREAT pix , jts1957....

I guess we need some clarification here....Wink....

Quote
Picture has an hourglass that extends 3 inches at the center

Since you did NOT give us a model # :=>....Unsure......
Depending on what size the TV is "hourglass" could have different interpetations....
On a small set that would be descriptive of a "pincushion" problem...
On a large TV , say 25" or bigger , that would be a "hourglass" problem....

Quote
A power supply component could affect pincushion?

NO !!!!!....But it CAN give you an "hourglass" !!!!

From jts1957;=>...

Just looking at this cap does NOT neccessarily mean it's OK.....
You need to check it with a cap checker &/or an ESR meter to get a verdict....

I agree ABSATIVELY & POSALUTELY !!!!
There is a God !!!!

Here's the thing;...You either have a "hourglass" OR a "pincushion" problem....
Which is it ????

Can you take a pix & post it so we can see exactly what it is you're talking about ????
Please post a model # & check the cap......

Ok- 27gt610fe1 25" set, must be hourglass as it does not bow on top or bottom. Also the color is skewed gradually across the left of the tube (like a magnet was sitting next to it) only test equip I have is a voltmeter, so accurately testing the cap is a problem. I am a laptop/camera/video game tech, tv chassis are a bit out of my scope, but I do well with an iron and schematics.

Thanks for replies:)

There are still more problems with this set- when attempting to adjust any on-screen video, the screen blanks when the up or down button is pressed, and the adjustment never occurs (+- line stays in middle of range). That is not a big problem, as this is going in kids room, and adjustments will not be needed.

THANK you for the pix...Cleared it up nicely.....
You definitely have a PINCUSHION problem....

THIS is an "Hourglass"=>>>

This problem involves a different circuit....
It is NOT in the power supply but in the Horiz out circuit....
Please give me some time to find a schematic or similar wiring diagram & I'll get back to you.....

Thank you! Cool

In the meantime, I have a sylvania srt4127w that was blowing fuses. Replaces the rectifier diodes, and now get power, but all video is compressed into 1 horizontal line across the middle of the screen. I would suspect bad vert IC, but do not have schematics... Unsure

SAMs 3308 says adjust R4803 for straight vertical lines at left and right sides of screen. Components in the 4800 series involve the pincushion circuit. I would suspect any of the electrolytic caps or transitors in this circuit.

Apparently Mel has a service manual for your TV....
I STILL can NOT find a "free" CTC167r manual online....Even with the model# , NO luck....Unsure...
I did manage to find & replace my corrupted CTC169 manual....Laugh.....
I do not know how close , if at all , the 2 chassis are....
The only way to figure that out would be to post a pic of the chassis top view & rear apron view....
In the meantime try Mel's suggestion....

PS:...Post the EXACT model # & Chassis # for the
Sylvania & I'll see what I can do there for you....

GOOD LUCK....

R803 is definitely the culprit Smile - The plastic 'thumbscrew' is broken, and pressure to the component remedys the problem. I checked for bad solder, but that is not the problem. Do you have the value for that resistor so I can get a replacement?

Thank you!

I will get a chassis # for the Sylvania today

That TV Badly needs to be degaussed.. looks like a rainbow on the screen.

Next tv- I have a sylvania srt4127w, BL2700F01012-1 chassis that was blowing fuses. I replaced the rectifier diodes, and now get power, but all video is compressed into 1 horizontal line across the middle of the screen.

Service manual: http://forum-files2.fobby.net/0004/5937/SYLVANIA%206420FE.pdf

Thanks again for help

IF this is the correct manual :=>..,
http://forum-files2.fobby.net/0004/5937/SYLVANIA%206420FE.pdf ....

look at page #32 in the PDF reader index or page #7-9 ....
On the upper left corner is IC551 , a LA78040A , which is your vertical output IC....
More than likely , it's bad....
You also need to check pin #2 for B+ of 26 vdc....
And C503 (47 mfd @ 35 vdc) for value & ESR....
IC551 is located near the tuner....
C503 is next to the IC...

Which one are you talking about here;=>..."""That TV Badly needs to be degaussed.. looks like a rainbow on the screen."""

Good Luck & have fun....Sly.....

Thank you - I got 0vdc from ground to pin 2 of the LA78040a with the chassis out of the TV on my bench.

The whole 500 component sections looks to have been pretty warm for a while (not surprising being surrounded by heatsinks?) as it is slightly 'browned', the darkest being around R575, 578, 579

buffalocomputer;....

Check both ends of R513 for your 26 vdc source...
One side will give you 0 vdc & the other (we hope) should have the 26 vdc....
Also read ohms to ground from pin #2 of IC551....

You need to check the ohms of;=>...

R575, 578 & 579 @ 1/4 watt.....
Each should be 15 ohms....
These 3 , I suspect will probably check OK ,
maybe off value a bit...
IF so you can replace with 1/2 watt resistors....
R513= 5.6 @ 2 watts...Vertical out IC B+...
Use ONLY 2 watt replacement if bad....

PLEASE post results of ALL checks....

Re: [Ron.M] CTC167R Pincushion problem [In reply to] Can't Post

1st, my apologies - I AM reading 28VDC at pin 2 of the vert chip after replacing the ground probe on my meter...Blush

Contrary to the manual schematics, R575, 578, 579 are all 47 ohm resistors, and R513 is a 4.7 ohm 2 watter
The 47's are within an ohm, and the 4.7 reads 5.2

Not sure why the values different on my board, the schematic routing looks the same...

I am also getting 28.8 VDC on BOTH sides of R513

It is the other TV showing the rainbow (actually lots-o-green on right bottom corner with a bit of warpage, and bluish along the left side)

OK , the manual is close but no cigar....
ARE you SURE it's the right one ???
Where did you find it ???
We may have to make do with what we got...
The resistors can be taken as good...All are within tolerence....

Is the pix compressed down to one skinny line across the screen OR is it about 1/2 inch or larger so you can see some video ???
Did you check C503 (47 mfd @ 35 vdc) for value & ESR ???....

When you get the control installed for the pincushion & adjusted , PLEASE take a pix WITH video & post it....
AND pix's of the chassis as earlier requested...
I'm 99.99997% certain I know what that is....But need to see it....

TV #1 ^^^^

TV2:
The manual was googled and is for a smaller Sylvania set, but has same chassis #. Perhaps different revisions of the same chassis?

1 very skinny line (maybe 1/8 in.)

I only have a cheap multi, so cap checking is basic... I did the ohms check, started at infinity, raised gradually for a sec. or 2 then back to infinity.

That is NOT the way to check caps , especially electrolytics !!!!!...Frown...
ALL that does is tell you the cap is able to charge up...That's IT ...Unsure....
I have 2 cap meters , 1 for ESR (The one below) & 1 for value....Both cheeeep !!!
One of the best ways is to get a cheap ESR meter....Smile....
Suggestion;=>...
http://matelectronics.com/...L_2d3333#aMUL_2d3333

It's cheap & basic , but it gets the job done...
IF you decide to get it , I'll give you some important advice on how to use it....

For now , just go to your local parts store & buy a 47 mfd @ 35 vdc (or 50 vdc if they don't have a 35 vdc cap) cap & replace it....

Also check on the number on the vertical IC....Is it the same as what's in the manual ???
