Funai - picture fades to black and light with VCR only

Have a Funai 21" with VCR. VCR is broken. When I put new VCR on through cable connection, the picture is very dark, and fades to light about every 15-20 seconds. This lasts for about 5 seconds and the picture is dark again. I've tried two VCRs, both of which work fine on other TVs. The picture on the TV is fine when I use it without the VCR for watching Cable channels.
Why does the picture fade only with VCR? Can it be fixed?
