Grundig picture failure & arcing / burning smell Can't Post

I have a grundig 14" portable (manufactured 1992) which was working great until one day recently when the picture suddenly went from full screen down to postcard size with distortion and colour 'wobble' - followed by a burning smell and some smoke from the rear grille. I turned it off, left it for a few minutes, then tried to switch on again. the red led standby light came on, but no picture or sound, and the sound of arcing and more burning accompanied by a small amout of smoke from the rear grille again. so I powered off and plugged out. The arcing / smoke was coming from a location to the left of the tube (as you look at the tv from the front) and about halfway between the front and back, so I presume it's not a tube fault.

Anybody have any suggestions as to the cause ? Could it be a simple component failure, or is it likely to be a complex (and expensive) replacement, which might not be worthwhile on an aging set (although it has relatively very little work done).

many thanks.

Your problem is more than likely the flyback transformer. If you can find one, you are probably looking at about $60 dealer cost for the transformer plus labor. With a set that old, it would be more cost effective to shop for a new one which would cost not a whole lot more than the cost of repairs. You might want to check out www.FreeFlatScreens.com/default.aspx?referer=7509165 for an opportunity to upgrade to a new replacement for this set with a little effort on your part.
