HELP - Sony Trinitron color warp Can't Post

Hi,

I'm new here. My SONY Trinitron KV-20TX11 (20 inch) just developed a color shift. At each corner is 2-3 stripes of rainbow arc, forming a triangle for each corner. In the dominant center part of the screen, the color shift is even with skin tone now purple-ish blue. The image is fine - bright and sharp. All functions seem to work. There have be no changes to the TV location/placement or objects surrounding it.

Is this a degaussing problem? Is it expensive to fix?

Please help...

Thanks!

Niki

I suspect you are switching off with the remote control. If you are then tonight when you are finished switch the TV off with the mains switch or unplug it, tomorrow you may get a surprise. I dont know the specific model but sets working on 220 to 250V this will usually fix them. In my career of many years I have never had to replace a PTC in a Sony, its always been needing degaussed. You can get someone out to do that but a couple of switch offs will do the same. US sets can use more complex circuits due to the voltage so if in US Im not so sure.

Don't forget to check the obvious - bad solder joint(s) in the degaussing circuit.

Re: [rrobor] HELP - Sony Trinitron color warp [In reply to] Can't Post

This Trinitron is from the mid 80s, U.S. market, 110-120V.

I unplugged the TV and let it sit for a few hours. Replugged and switched it on... no change. I've repeated this process a few times to no effect. Is it possible the degauss unit is fried? Is it pricey to repair or should I just dump the TV?

How do I locate the solder joint(s)? I've removed the back panel before to clean the dust off the tube.

Follow the degaussing coil wires to where it plugs into the main board. The degaussing "thermistor" should be in the same area. Examine the "foil" side of that area for bad joints.

Re: [jts1957] HELP - Sony Trinitron color warp [In reply to] Can't Post

I opened the back-cover but didn't feel confident tearing things apart. So I brought it to a local shop... the degausser was fixed to a tune of $45. Not bad for a 25 yr old TV.

On a side note, the tech complimented the quality of the old CRTs and said that today's flat panel don't last more than 5-6 years. Is that true? I'm thinking about getting a 40" plasma in the near future.

Thanks for your help.

40 ins plasma is a good choice for a guy with excess money, second choice just behind that is flush it down the toilet.

I'd say more like 3 to 7 years before first failure. And that's with the best of care.

I guess modern electronics is like modern automobiles, designed with quick obsolescence and expensive repair. The good thing is I'm in no hurry at the moment.

There was a sale last week on a Panasonic 42" 720p plasma for $600. This is their entry level model while the 1080p model is about $1000.

I didn't go for it due to the lack of RCA connection for my sound system; it has optical.

What kind of care is involved?

I'm thinking mostly of lack of care, aka the "abuse" (Not secured properly, Being positioned on too small of table, mounting over a radiator, Bouncing tennis balls off the screen, If on swivel mount trying to twist past its limits, etc.)Angelic

Bouncing tennis balls against my Sony is what I'm doing while watching Wimbledon. Laugh
