Crazy My bad. I didn't see your address to the pic. Your Panel is loosing gas. The problem is going to get worse until eventually no pic and a loud buzzing sound. Sorry

Crazy No you can't. There is a very small crack somewhere on the panel that you probably can't see.

Crazy I don't think you can stop the leak, but even if you can, the picture will never get better. As far as your other set, hard to tell. Picture is not that great. Looks more like reflection from lights or dirty or something.

Re: [jjcool] Hitachi 42PD9700 screen marks? [In reply to] Can't Post

I have the same problem.

I doubt it is linked to the plasma itself.
The marks are on the internal face of the external (plexi)glass of the TV set.

I guess:
1 - Dust collection or some electrostatic phenomenon.
or
2 - Some coating peeling off.

1 may be cured by dismounting and cleaning.

Any news on your side ?

LOL,,,,,I've never seen that thread.

It isn't gas leaking. It is marks on the inside of the protective screen. Panasonic also uses that on some models.

The PITA part,,,,you have to lift the panel and everything out to clean it.

I'll look up your model on Hitachi's service center page next week to see if there is an easier way..

Good luck,
Jim

Thank you very much, Jim.

I downloaded the service manual, but it only contains bad quality drawings of the device.
Removing the back looks quite easy. Then removing the the protective screen may just involve removing some screws, or a be a true PITA as you said !

I've been very happy with this plasma TV since 2006.
Although it is not full HD, its 1024*1080 resolution produces very very good images on HD sources and very balanced and natural colors.
From time to time I have a look at new models. Mostly LCD now. Things improve slowly, but I often feel the images look digitalized, or at least not as natural as on the 9700.

So, I will probably buy another TV set one day or the other, but untill then, I'll stick to my plasma.
But It have to solve this gray cloud marks problem.

I'll post the results asa I have collected enough courage to start the job !

Thank you again.

Hi nemonyme
My Hitachi 42PD9700 has exactly the same issue. We like its picture but the marks are beginning to be more noticeable, and appear to be getting worse.
I refer to them as "watermarks" although that's just my way of describing the effect - like looking at watermarks through notepaper.
This plasma is wall mounted and I'm not keen to get it down off the wall unless there's a good chance of the issue being resolved. I'm reluctant to replace it. It's just 5 years old and it's a good performer. We prefer its picture to a newer Toshiba LCD in another room!
Please update us with your findings!
Thanks,
Steve

Re: [notfes53] Hitachi 42PD9700 screen marks? [In reply to] Can't Post

Got an answer from Hitachi support.
They say the the 'front filter' (the front glass) must be replaced.
Quite expensive (350 Euros), and anyway it has to be dismantled, so why not try cleaning.
So, I'm back looking for courage to do it !

Just like you notfes53, although the 9700 has a few years now, I'm not sure I will get any better with a new device.

What a pity having such problems with a basic part with no electronics, and no reason to wear !

Hi,
I have the exact same problem with my 5-year old PD9700 and found this thread whilst searching on the 'net for answers. I'm in the UK but I see from your post nemonyme, that you had a reply from Hitachi re replacing the screen. It is quite expensive in euros but nowhere near as much as would cost to get another TV as good as this.
Please could you tell me how you contacted Hitachi. I wouldn't dare to try and remove the screen myself so I'd be interested in how to go about getting it repaired.
Thanks.

Re: [anniep] Hitachi 42PD9700 screen marks? [In reply to] Can't Post

I contacted tech.assist@hitachi-eu.com .

Got a reply saying that the 'Front Filter' had to be replaced.
The part costs 230 Euros + Shipping. But they just talked about the part.
So I guess they thought I would do the job myself. Having it done by a professionnal is probably more expensive.

But I dont' feel like replacing the part because the problem will probably reappear sooner or later.

So, I want to see if I can do something on my own first.

But I had no time to do it up to now. Hopefully (and a bit sadly), winter's coming, and will be home more often.

Regards

Nem

Re: [nemonyme] Hitachi 42PD9700 screen marks? [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for your reply nemonyme.

I contacted Hitachi at their Consumer Affairs Dept and they were less than useless to be honest. They more or less told me that they don't have problems with their colour TVs so my experience is very rare! This, despite the fact that I'd told them that I'd found other people with the same problem. I'll try sending the same email to the tech.assist and see if they have more of a clue - I'm not holding my breath. In the meantime, I've emailed a TV repair centre not too far away to see if they can help but again, I'm not very hopeful. I just wonder what will happen when this cloudiness covers the whole screen.

Do keep posting re your progress, I'll be really interested. It's such a shame this has happened as I think the set is superb otherwise, and I'm struggling to find one to replace it. Apparently the sound is an issue on all new sets and the sound from this set is great even without extra audio equipment.

Cheers
anniep

Re: [nemonyme] Hitachi 42PD9700 screen marks? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi i have the same tv with the same problem. It is about 7years old but started about 3 years ago. It started in the top right hand corner and over the course of 3 years it has crept over nearly 1/2 of the screen working its way down to the bottom left of the screen.
I too though it was dirt or moisture and contacted hitachi when it first started., they were no help and told me to take it to a main dealer. I disregarded their advice and took it apart my self. The front Panel came out fairly easy but I then realised that it wasn't as easy as giving it a clean. It appears that there is a protective film stuck to the inside surface of the front panel and that had started to come away. I did not want to trying to remove it for fear of making it worse so put it back together and have lived with it now for about 3 years. It is slowly getting worse and I was thinking or replacing it, so I might take it apart again and have another go. Let me know if either of you have got any further.
Thanks
Darren.
