Hitachi 51F59A screen Can't Post

Hitachi 51F59A has a flexible grid type screen that is very dirty, apparently on the inside, as cleaning the outside has no effect. How can this be cleaned?

mdhart;...

You will have to remove the front screen to clean the screen & the lenses inside...
While I look for a service manual to give you directions on how to do that , please answer the following questions....
It's very important that you be honest with your answers...
What did you use to clean the outside with ???
What type cleaner did you use ???
What did you use to wipe the screen with ???

I'll be back as soon as you reply....

THANKS...Smile...Smile...Smile..

Re: [Ron.M] Hitachi 51F59A screen [In reply to] Can't Post

As instructed by manual, I tried lightly soapy soft cloth (a diaper) , and tried lcd cleaning liquid on microfiber cloth. When I pressed on the screen, I discovered that it is flexible, and on close (non-magnified) visual inspection, it seems the 'dirt' is on the inside (electrostatic deposits?)

mdhart;.....

Thank you for your quick honest reply...

I'm still trying to find a manual for your TV...
Using lightly soapy soft cloth with a diaper should not have damaged the screen..(This part is OK)...
UNLESS you rubbed the daylights out of it...Shocked...
That screen is specially made & treated to direct all the light from the CRTs toward the viewer...
It has a special coating on the front side...
I'm not familiar enough with LCD cleaner as that product is specially made for a different type of screen...
There is a possibility that you may have damaged the screen...
The "dirt" you see on the inside most likely is NOT dirt but the coating & the way the screen is made...
99.9999% of the time , the inside of the front screen does not need to be cleaned....
99.9999% of the time the poor pix quality (Blurry , fuzzy pix) is due to dirty lenses...
The lenses are pointed upward inside the TV & therefore collect dust settling on the top surface of the lens...
Give me some time to find the manual (Possibly a few hours) & I'll get back to you....
It is a 12MB~21MB file & since I'm on dial-up , that will take some time for me to download..

mdhart;......

I found a "free" service manual that is a large file (21MBs)...
I will need about 2 hours to download..
I will be back in about 2 hours...
Thanks for your patience...

Thanks, Ron. Is the manual something I could download on my fast connection? I have some experience with electronics (ham radio, computers), but didn't want to dive into the tv without a manual.

btw, there is an oval/eliptical area in the center of the screen that is completely clear.

Re: [mdhart] Hitachi 51F59A screen [In reply to] Can't Post

mdhart;.....

THANKS for your patience....

Get a beer & relax...Wink....

This IS a LONG post....

We're going to try & accomplish 2 things here...
1)..Clean the CRT lenses &
2)..Check on the condition of the CRT coolant...

1st off;....
The service manual does not give instructions on how to remove the front screen...Unsure....
So we'll just have to figure it out on our own...

Turn TV off & unplug it...

I have 4 pix below;=>....

This is #1....

This shows that to remove the speaker cover , you just grab on both sides of the cover & firmly (NOT FORCEFULLY) pull the cover off...
Use care to not use too much force when you pull on the cover , you may break it...

This is #2;=>...
(This is actually 1/2 of #2)...

2nd part of #2;=>...

This is where it gets a little froggy...Unsure...
There is a control panel (#6) on the front with power , volume up , volume down , etc pushbuttons on it..
I'm not sure IF that has to be disconnected/removed to get the screen off...
You'll have to determine that yourself...
Also , it looks like the screen is held on by screws from the backside of the top...
See pix #3 below;=>...

It appears that there are 4 screws down each side & 4 across the top...
IF those are the screws & you take them out , use care to make sure that when you take the last screw (Recc. top screw) out it doesn't fall to the floor & crack the screen..
IF that control panel is attached to the screen , take it off before you unscrew the screen screws if possible...
If you have ANY questions or run into a problem on how to do this , STOP & post it & I'll get back when I can to guide you further..

Cleaning the inside of the front screen;....

Do NOT use LCD cleaner !!!
Get some Windex glass cleaner or similar non-abrasive glass cleaner...
Use a clean diaper or "T" shirt...
Spray the cleaner on the DIAPER , NOT the screen...
Do NOT rub the screen...
Use the diaper like a dusting rag & lightly wipe it down...

Cleaning the lenses..
Again , Spray the cleaner on the DIAPER , NOT the lenses...
The lenses are made from clear plastic & scratch easily...
So , do NOT rub hard...
Gently rub & clean the lenses...

Use the same procedure for the mirror...
Do NOT spray the mirror as the possibility of spray getting on sensitive parts may cause damage...
Do not rub hard as the mirror may be plastic also..

Now , here's the tricky part;...
Checking the coolant;...
The coolant may be contaminated & could give you a blurry/bad pix...
Leave the front screen off the set & in a safe place...
Turn the TV on...
When you see all 3 lenses lit up , creep up slowly on the red CRT to give your eyes time to adjust to the briteness & look directly into the CRT lens..
You should see a small rectangular pix on the CRT face..
It should be clear & in focus...
You should be able to see some very thin pencil lines running in the pix from left to right...
Next , do the same thing to the green & blue CRTs..
IF you see ANYTHING in the coolant , usually gobs of semi-clear gook , it IS contaminated...
Please post results...THANKS...Smile...

Having fun yet ????....Wink..

Or ???
Can you take & post a pix if needed ???

You having the manual & me not , does not work...
I have to see what the deal is...
IF you want/need the manual , ask & I'll give you a link for it...

Re: [Ron.M] Hitachi 51F59A screen [In reply to] Can't Post

Many thanks, Ron.

There are indeed 4 screws across top and down both sides (12 total). I'm sure I'll be able to identify the crt's, and assume I will be able to identify the mirror, but wouldn't mind a hint about that Wink

I do have some experience w/ high voltage gizmos, but those experiences include letting the smoke out of some components, so, I will wait until I'm fully prepared to replace the unit w/ something more modern before I undertake disassembling it. Not long, I hope.

The picture is still quite good, other than the dirty areas being occluded/discolored to some degree, so I'm thinking the coolant is not very contaminated. If it is, I assume that it would be better to get a new tv than to replace the coolant?

Thanks again!

mdhart;....

OK , glad to see that we don't have a OOOOooopppss....Wink...
Going in the front of the TV as I described poses NO Hi-Voltage or ANY other voltage hazard/danger...
You'd be looking at 3 lenses , a mirror & some cardboard panels used to block dust from getting on the chassis , etc...

Hitachi usually does not have the "contaminated coolant" problem...
It was Magnavox/Philips that had a huge batch of defective coolant manufactured by a subcontractor...
It was contaminated from the git-go...
But , I thought that as long as you were there & it is handy enough to do , why not check it ???
Replacing coolant yourself is not expensive , just labor intensive...
It's really not that hard to do...
Far cheaper than replacing the TV...
AND , I might add , your TV WILL outlast these new flat screen TVs by a longshot...

I will PM you with the link for the Service Manual....

Good Luck....Sly...

Let me/us know how you do ....
