Hitachi Tube TV 27AX3B - Horizontal Lines Can't Post

Hi, I have a Hitachi 27AX3 (or 27AX3B), a tube tv from 1994, and it just started displaying a horizontal line pattern. I looked through some of the posts here, and several pointed to a relatively easy fix. Any ideas on this one? Here's a link to what it looks like on the screen:

thx,

brad

Try resoldering suspicious-looking joints. Could be vertical output, power supply?Cool

that's me being sarcastic (and quoting George Carlin); I just felt that your reply was very non-specific, but thanks anyway.

Just the "Vertical":
IC625
C624 thru C627 & C629

Try that for "specific."

And NO, I'm not gonna point them out to you!

Why you ungrateful whelp! Do you know how much experience Jts or myself or others have?- obviously not!. So when Jts or myself or anyone else experienced says check vertical- that is what you check!!!!. The vast no,s of tv,s etc means different parts, locations etc to do the same job!. If!!!- you brought the tv to Jts or myself or other experienced- that is what we would check!. Accept this or go & get stuffed- I couldn't care less.

You are wasting your time here now friend, you have insulted almost every guy who could help you. The first picture suggests the front end to me or the supply. But there again who am I but just another of those idiot techs you dont listen to anyway. What I do know is you wont fix this, theres not enough sites to do what you do. You could try Mr Henry Bell.

Found:
The voltage on pin 12 is 14.2,Bplus in on pin 8 26.0 ,pin 13 26.4, pin 2 4.3 . There is an 100uf cap ofpin 13. a 1uf off pin 6,Off pin1 47uf cap.also you could have an 2.2 uf cap bad that is located in the middle of chassis.

sorry, I'm not a tech (but I do have 15+ years as an electronics mfg engineer). With that said, I see a 2.2uf at c484, and I scraped away some oxidation along the 13 pin IC625. Then, I powered on the tv, and there was about a 1-inch area along the top of the display filled with white horizontal lines, which dissipated and was gone within 30-60 seconds. Tv's been on for about five minutes, now, picture is good.

How long of a "burn-in" should I allow before I button up the unit?

You dont, its not fully fixed, the booster cap on the vertical is faulty (high ESR when cold) that will kill the vertical chip if left. Should be about a 100uF35V and it will have a diode feeding it

Re: [rrobor] Hitachi Tube TV 27AX3B - Horizontal Lines [In reply to] Can't Post

here's an update on the situation. Last night I watched for an hour or so, then turned it off for several hours, then on again for a couple more hours--all fine.

This morning I put the cover back on and when i turned on the set, the lines were back but any slight movement of the chassis or slight rap on the side would clear the picture. Turned it off for eight hours, and just turned it on--looks fine.

So, I'm not kidding myself, I realize that something is amiss, but could it be something other than the caps that we've mostly been talking about? Seems more like an electro-mechanical device--does the power supply fall in to that category?

Lines at the top of the screen is the vertical chip, normally the booster cap. Now if you can knock and fix it, resolder everything on and around the vertical chip, sometimes a joint looks OK and is not

ok, I'll do that eventually. Just now I turned on the set and the lines appeared; it took cycling on-off four times to get the picture clear.

Yes the TV just loves all those spikes and sparks as you flip on and off. I do hope you waiit 30 seconds between off then on again. If not hit the timing correctly and you will blow up the supply.

Re: [bbowens] Hitachi Tube TV 27AX3B - Horizontal Lines [In reply to] Can't Post

Here's an update if anyone is still interested. After several weeks of living with the situation, the picture degraded into a thin bright horizontal line across the center of the screen and the banging on the chassis would not recover the picture.

So, I went to the soldering iron and reflowed each joint where recommended (the IC, and the caps). Then, I touched up the joints that looked cold or desoldered. I did not remove any of the components or wick any solder away.

After buttoning everything up, the picture came back to a watchable level, but there is still some residual flickering/bouncing that comes and goes.

Question--does this information give anymore clues as far as what to do next? Should I do a more thorough re-soldering of the recommended components, or should i now embark on replacing parts?

thanks again,

brad.
