JVC 27", thin horizontal line

Hello,
We have a 1996 AV-27720 television that now displays a thin horizontal line in center of screen. We found (accidentally) that by tapping on the top of the TV the picture would try to display. For a while we could bring it back that way. Now we can't.
Is this anything I can fix or will it need a trip to the TV doc? Is this the tube or circuitry? Is there a vertical/horizontal "hold" on these TV's that I can get at or is it something more serious.
