JVC AV-27D202 uneven brightness problem Can't Post

I got this CRT TV for nothing. I successfully fixed a folded display problem and thought everything was OK, but then I realized the TV has another, more subtle problem. The brightness is uneven, i.e. the left side of the picture is darker than the right side. This is particularly obvious when displaying a black image. It annoys me and I would like to fix that.

What should I look at? I used to work in the electronics field, but that was ages ago. I don't have much experience in TV repair, but I know a few things about TVs and video. I remember one can adjust the color purity by moving the yoke on the CRT's neck. Is brightness also affected? Or should I look at the horizontal drive circuit? I would intuitively suspect there's a bad capacitor in that circuit.

I have the schematics for this TV. I also have the service manual, but I don't have the remote control, which is used to access a secret service menu. However, I doubt the hidden settings would allow me to solve that uneven brightness problem.

Thank you for your time!

hyperfrog;....

I have the manual for that set.....
In your manual , look for a ~200 vdc supply that goes to the video out transistors on the CRT module....
It comes from the flyback , in my manual (page 5 of 9) , off pin #3 thru D581 , thru R581 & viola C581....
This cap is 10 mfd @ about 250 vdc....
Most likely bad.....

Good Luck.....Sly.....

PS;...Son-of-a gun !!!!!.....Looks like jts gets up a little earlier than I do.....Wink....
Well ,now you have 2 expert oppinions that agree....

Thank you, guys. C581 being bad seems logical. I will have to go buy a suitable replacement cap, as I don't have one handy. I will do the repair when my spouse is out ;) and will post the results here.

BTW, I have a scope. I suppose there should be a steady 200V DC there. Will check that before replacing the cap.

Well, that didn't do it. Problem's still there. Frown It isn't that obvious when displaying anything but a dark picture. Once you are aware of it, though, you just can't help but notice the gradient (darker on the left, brighter on the right).

How about a C381 on CRT board?

I thought about that, but C381 isn't there. I believe all parts marked with an X on the schematic are optional or only present on some other model.

Could it be some bad cap in the ABL circuit? Maybe C311 or C583?

Can only try.
Don't see why ABL circuit would affect half screen one way and other half another way.
What is the 200 volts source measuring?

I didn't use a voltmeter, but the scope showed some 200 V DC with low ripple. I guess a bit of ripple is to be expected. I replaced C581 all the same, but it didn't solve the problem.
