LG 42PQ2000- sound but no picture

Hi there,
We have a problem with our LG plasma screen, which is only four years old (according to LG this is a good innings for a TV these days!).
A couple of days ago, when we switched it on there is a brief black/white picture of sorts at the top of the screen which then disappears and the screen is black. We only get the black/white image for a second or so. The audio is fine. Having done some reading up, popping and then no picture seems common but we didn't have any of this.
I did contact LG who suggested anything to do with the picture simply isn't worth trying to repair, but thought I would get a second opinion on this. I have got a photo of what the screen looks like when you initially switch it on but there doesn't seem to be the facility to post pictures up. But basically its like an indecipherable white/black image at the top four/five inches of the screen, or sometimes at the bottom as well.
Any help much appreciated...
