Loewe remote failure

HELP !!!!
I have a Loewe 66cm Cantus model. 5 years old. The remote has stopped working. Its a bit weird as when I press a button on the remote the red light on the TV flashes, so the remote still appears to be talking to the TV. I have tried replacing the batteries and making sure the remote is not on the DVD and VTR mode, but I can't get the telly to do anything. I have also had the following text "remote is sending VCR commands" appear on the TV, seemingly at random. No matter what I do with the remote I can't get the TV to respond. Can ANYONE help? Am I doing something wrong with the remote? Do I need a new remote or a new TV?
