Magnavox Big Black Square Can't Post

I have a 32" Magnavox TV model TS3270 B101. Recently a big, black square will appear in the middle of the screen almost completely covering it. It does this about once every few days. If you touch a remote control button the black square will leave the screen and return in a few seconds. Is this the beginning of the end?

Thx

Bump.........have a little 13" magnavox, like they sell at Walmart, has the same problem. Will have a rectangular black box appear on screen almost covering the lower half of screen. change channel it goes away, then reappears in a few seconds. It is intermittant. Also the TV remote control device does not work, I think both problems may be related. I have done all the steps to insure it is not the remote control, up to buying a new remote control.
Thanks Mike

Turn "Off" your "Text." Part of "closed captioning". If you need further ... RTFM!

OR

The set needs repair.Cool

Cool You know, if I couldn't be any more help than that, I believe I would just stay over on the "GEE I'M A SMARTAZZ FORUM"!Tongue Don't have a manual, TV doesn't have "closed caption" capability. I already knew it needed repair Einstein, that is why I posted the question!Wink

Must be a very old set...

The solution was the Television Decoder Circuitry Act of 1990.

This Act, which took effect July 1, 1993, required all television receivers with screens 13 inches or larger, that were made in the United States or imported into the United States, to be capable of displaying closed captions.

I didn't know that. This TV was made in 2000?? Like I said, the remote in the TV doesn't work. I stepped thru the menu with the buttons on the front of the TV, but didn't see any "caption" prompts, so I assumed it doesn't have caption capability........just went and checked again and still don't see anything about "captions".?????????????

The location of the original remote is unknown.
The model # is: MT1301B101
I haven't opened the set up yet. I am not a technician. I have repaired a few TVs by painstakingly serching for loose solder connections and re-soldering them. I can solder and replace components, if someone can help me figure which ones to replace. This TV is old enough I am not afraid to screw it up by tearing into it. I was just curious to see how much help I could get here. For all I knew, someone might know just what the problem was and be able to post a photo to show what I needed to replace. I thought it was worth a try, and I haven't given up yet.Wink

You NEED the right remote! See user manual (Link below) page #7.Wink

Since the Original remote is Lost, When was the last time a "Universal" one worked the set? and I assume IT does NOT have a "CC" button.

Re: [jts1957] Magnavox Big Black Square [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for the link! I'll check it out. Don't have a remote at all. The original one quit working. Tried batteries first, then two different universal remotes. My guess is the original remote got trashed. The other two were returned for refund. (Also tried two different universal remotes I already had and they wouldn't work the TV either.) Unless I am missing something, I really believe the TV is the problem. (last post for the night)............Mike

Re: [mike11] Magnavox Big Black Square [In reply to] Can't Post

So NO "Universal" remote has ever worked ANY function on this set? (You WERE wrong about the "closed captioning.") Remote IS still available. One possible source is:

BTW this IS the "GEE I'M A SMARTAZZ FORUM"!
