No DC Power on TV/VCR

I am new to this forum, which has a lot of great information, but I did not see this problem addressed in the archives. My 1999 Zenith 9in TV/VCR (Model TVSB0902) works fine with AC power, but will not do anything at all (not even a click, buzz, hum, or anything) with DC power in the car. Any ideas about the fix for this? I checked on the fuse in the plug and it is okay. Oh yeah, if it matters, it worked fine before my father recently borrowed it while his house power was out, and he tried to rig it up to some other DC source besides his cigarette lighter. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!
