Panasonic PV-M2036, Video Input Issue

i have a panasonic PV-M2036 TV/VCR combo with a video input problem.
when i plug in my DVD player into the TV, the picture doesn't show well for certain dvds.
The picture is perfect during the menu screens and for a few seconds when i begin to play the feature, but and then it dims for a few seconds and then its perfect again for a few seconds and then dims again and continues as such.
The only dvds seem to play perfect on the tv are the lord of the rings dvds.
i've tried a variety of dvds, family guy, pirates of the caribbean, and swingers, all of which have this problem.
is this a format problem?
