Panasonic TV, scrambled picture and just a little sound

I have a 27" Panasonic TV that was manufactured in late 93'.. While its an old
TV its also a nice piece of furniture (console model)
The TV worked great up till the other night, while watching TV the screen went black, and I
lost sound. The power light stayed on. I unplugged the TV and plugged it back in and I get a
screen that is like the signal is scrambled, also all the onscreen menus display fine..
I get a tiny bit of sound (does not change when I tune the volume all the way up or down).
any idea what could cause this? what should I look for..
any help is appreciated! :)
