Philips 27PS55S/321 Startup Problem Can't Post

This problem started about 5 months ago and progressively got worse. The problem has to do turning the TV on. Once on the picture is bright and sharp. When the problem first began, the picture didn't fill the screen horizontally and it would jump sideways and was fuzzy. After several seconds the picture filled the screen horizontally and stabilized. This problem gradually got worse, taking longer to fill the screen horizontally. Most recently I have had to turn the TV on and off several times to get the picture to stabilize. Once the picture was up and running there was not further problem. At last the TV just would not turn on. No pilot light no sounds at all. I opened the cabinet and found the fuse by the power cord to be fine. The resistor at location R3340 measured 10.2 ohms.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

A fine inspection of the main board, paying careful attention to the power and horizontal deflection areas may result in finding a burnt component or bad solder joint. Chassis # ?

"R3340 measured 10.2 ohms"
IF it's labeled 10 ohms - no problem...
If it's labeled 1,000 ohms - there is a problem.

The resistor is supposed to be 10 ohms. The chassis number is 27T800 7629. I did examine the main board and the smaller board (on the tube) and did not see anything burned or damaged.

Probably 5% to 7% of the time you can actually visually "spot" a defect.Wink

5-7% are pretty low odds. jts1957 is there a reason you asked for the chassis number?

A lot of times is easier to search by chassis.

i whould resolder the power supply and flyback area for a start
also check for leaky caps like the 250v by the flyback

ian33: Could you help me locate some of these components. I assume they are all on the large circuit board. Just where is the flyback area?

Jts1957: You asked for the Chases number. Have you located the schematic or service manual yet?

Does anyone know where I can get a service manual or schematic? The Philips site has only the user manual.

I wouldn't be pursuing this issue except that this TV Set has a rather nice picture - as good as many flat panels I've seen. Thank you for your interest and you help.

helixal;.....

I'd give very little creedence to ian33's advice if I were you....

As far as the Chassis number goes , look on the label where you got the model number from & you'll see a chassis number there also....
The reason for asking for a chassis number is that we/us may be able to get the manual for your set that covers a series of models for that same chassis....
It may help us help you....
I suspect that your chassis number is 27T800 , but , we/us need to verify it....

Thanks much for link. Cool

Start by seeing if you have raw b-plus across 2503 (main electrolytic filter).

Re: [jts1957] Philips 27PS55S/321 Startup Problem [In reply to] Can't Post

Walla!

Just so we are all on the same page The link took me to manual 27PS60s 7629. I assume that my model 27PS55s uses the same manual. I printed out the power supply diagram A1 (page 89 on my pdf display) and located 2503 which looks like a capacitor in parallel with 2504 and 2505. Now what am I measuring? I assume a voltage with the set plugged in. What should it be? Recall when I press the power switch nothing happens. I don't hear any noises. I assume the mains switch (9505 on the diagram) is staying open.

Thanks much.

Re: [helixal] Philips 27PS55S/321 Startup Problem [In reply to] Can't Post

Model numbers covered is on pages 12/13.
You should also notice this set uses two ground systems: a triangle that's empty/hollow (HOT ground - bottom of 2503, for example) and a triangle composed of three lines (COLD ground - pin 17/18 of transformer 5520, for example).
With any TV unplugged the vast majority of measurements will be ZERO. You will be measuring a DC voltage of around 160 volts across 2503.

Mains switch 0231 is PROBABLY NOT used in your set.
9500 & 9501 are JUMPER WIRES that ARE probable used in your set.
Suffice it to say, I guarantee your set WILL use one or the other (switch or jumper wires - NOT both). IF your set used this switch, it would operate like a "vacation" switch.
You may want to read page 40/41.

First, I unplugged the TV and measured the voltage at 10.7 v. With the TV plugged in the voltage was 154 v.

NOT after a day or so.

Check for approximately 140VDC across capacitor 2561. IF NO voltage, check value of resistors 3523 (100) & 3532 (2.2K). IF O.K., Integrated Circuit 7520 is likely bad.

I don't understand "NOT after a day or so. "
The set was plugged in for several days. I unplugged it and checked across 2503 (which felt slightly warm)and got 10.7v. Several minutes elapsed between the unplugging and the measurement. I assume that the 154v is a good measurement with the set plugged in. Does this rule out the flyback transformer?

Let's try it this way: If you leave the set unplugged for a day or so you won't even get that (10.7V).

jts1957:

You will be measuring a DC voltage of around 160 volts across 2503.

helixal:

With the TV plugged in the voltage was 154 v.

Is 154v close to 160V? Um...Yes

Quote
Does this rule out the flyback transformer?

NOT even close to that point yet.

WELL?

OK, back to the challenge at hand.

Here is what I found:

With the set plugged in, I noticed for the first time a chirping sound. It is so faint that I did not notice it earlier( or it wasn't there.) It seems to come from the middle area of the board, but I cannot locate it precisely.

1) with the set plugged in, I got 1.2V at capacitor 2561.

2) TV unplugged, resistor 3523 measured 100.6 ohms.

3) TV unplugged resistor 3532 measured :no deflection in the meter. I assume it is open.
