Philips TV no picture but beeps, please help...?

Hi everyone,
I've seen a few posts here in response to smiilar problems on other makes of TV, so I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to offer some advice?
Its a 29" standard Philips TV, model no. 29PT828/05, and suddenly it no longer switches on properly - just the standby light, no picture, and beeping...
Typically, what does this signal tell the TV repair shop? I have some electronics background but have never tried my hand at TV repair, and before I risk damage to the TV myself I hoped to find out how much work might potentially be involved... Is this a common problem, can anyone advise...?
Many thanks for any advice and also tolerance of a relative newbie...
