Please Help: Broken KDL-46V5100 TV Can't Post

The TV is an 18 month old KDL-46V5100. The problem started as a ghosting image issue, but that only lasts a few minutes. After that it progresses to a vertical colored line issue. The lines change colors and positions as the image changes on the screen. Its like it picks out a few Pixels in a horizontal line and then swipes vertically over top of the image that is being displayed. Some colors seem to be more commonly swiped, especially white and red. It does it with all inputs and changing pictures settings don't do anything. When you change channels the or switch inputs the lines show up on the black screen, and if the screen is left black long enough they will slowly fade away. Also the image appears fine for the first few seconds after the TV is turned on and slowly fade in within a few seconds. Even the"BRAVIA" text that shows up on the screen when you first turn the TV creates vertical lines of white color as well as the TV menu screens.

I have noticed that if I use the HDMI input (ps3) it doesn't seem to do it nearly as bad as when watching basic cable through the Coaxial input.

I have replaced the T-conn board but it didn't fix it. Also twisting the display doesn't seem to effect the lines or anything. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it?

Pictures of TV can be found here: http://imageshack.us/g/200/verticallinesa.jpg/ (the black picture was taken of in between channels, while flipping through through them)

Thanks for any help or suggestions!

This sounds like you have a bad LCD panel & Sony is very common for this; it's a bonding issue where the flex cables attach to the LCD panel.

Although one thing you could try is to remove the flex cables that go between the Tcon board & the Screen driver boards (mounted along the top edge of the panel; very hard to get at that end) mark them with a sharpie marker which direction they go back.

When you have them off take a clean soft pencil eraser and rub it on the contacts of the flex cables to remove a thin layer of oxidation on the copper ends being very careful not to damage them as they are very delicate. Do this on both ends of the cables & replace. You could try just the end that connects to the Tcon board first because of how much you have to take apart to get at the top end that connects to the screen drivers.

This also may be a problem with the main signal board.

I just ordered a replacement main board (the board with all the video input connections) yesterday. Is that the main signal board your talking about?

Also the problem was intermittent at first, worked for a few weeks then was messed up for a day or two, then would be fine again, but it became more and more common, and now the image is messed up 100% of the time.

thanks for the help

Yes that is the main signal board I was talking about; be sure to let us know if the main board fixes your problem. Best of Luck!!

Well replacing the main signal board made no difference. I also cleaned the flex cables where they plug into the tconn board, and that didn't help either. I tried moving the the flex cables around, pushing on them and stuff, but still no change in the picture.

I did notice that there are 2 cables coming from the tconn board to the screen. When I unplug one cable that side of the screen goes white. So each cable controls that corresponding side of the screen. But my problem is equally messed up on both sides of the screen, So that makes me think its not a cable or a bonding issue. I mean really would both sides unbond exactly the same, or both cables equally corrode? I would expect one side to be worse or at least start first showing signs of failure before the other side.

I'm thinking the problem is upstream of the TConn board, but what else is left to replace? Could it be a power supply issue? Anyone have any new thoughts or suggestions? Is there a way to test the poor bonding to LCD theory?

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

When you disconnect the cables you are dropping all signal completely to that half of the screen. So the problem won't show unless video is going there.

Sony "claimed" to try a firmware update. But changing the main, you've changed the firmware, just confirm it is the latest version.

But it does sound like you've got a bad panel, I've seen this many times.

Good luck,
