Problem with my SAMSUNG DLP HL-R5087W Can't Post

I have a SAMSUNG DLP 5087W DLP tv. The unit is 4 years old. Last week the device stopped displaying a picture. The power is on, the lamp is on, the fans appear to be running and the color wheel is spinning. Once the unit is on, I'm unable to turn it off. I'm also unable to perform other functions such as menu, change source, change channel, volume, etc. This is true when performing the functions from the pedestal and the remote control. I had a repair person in earlier in the week. He basically pulled the inners of the tv out, looked at the lamp, color wheel and fans. Said they all appeared to be fine and made a snap decision that it was the digital module. I asked him how he knew that. His response was, from experience. As you know, the DM is one of the most expensive parts to replace on the TV. I did not have it replaced because I did not feel comfortable with his diagnosis or technical knowledge. My question is, has anyone experienced a similar problem with this model television? If not, can anyone provide some advice regarding how I can determine if the DM is bad. I don't want to sink hundreds of dollars into a TV that cost me a couple grand. Any help would be most appreciated! Crazy

One other thing. No error messages or symbols get displayed after the TV boots up. It appears to come up clean once it's powered on. It goes into standby mode after 3 minutes. I can power it back up from standby mode but as mentioned above, cannot power it off.

Re: [gdprice] Problem with my SAMSUNG DLP HL-R5087W [In reply to] Can't Post

My Samsung HL-R4667W TV was diagnosed today with the same problem (digital board) although my symptoms are different.

When I turn on TV, normal single click is heard, lamp light blinks for a minute or so, lamp appears on through grill in back of TV, but no picture or sound. After a couple of minutes, all lights go out, TV turns off, and standby light comes on a minute later.

Repair shop said it was $520 to replace this board! Yikes. Also said, if that doesn't fix it, it might be the DMD board which costs $600 to replace.

Ideas?

Thanks!

Rob

Hi Rob,
Did your repair man do anything other than visually and manually inspect the parts of your TV. Mine looked at the lamp, fans, color wheel and power supply. Since they all seemed to be working based on his manual inspection, he said it had to be my digital module. He never mentioned the digital board. Any idea what that board is supposed to control?
Thanks,
Greg Crazy

Re: [gdprice] Problem with my SAMSUNG DLP HL-R5087W [In reply to] Can't Post

I have only spoken to the repair men on the phone and described the symptoms. In my searching on the web, I found a service manual for the Samsung HLT5076SX/XAA DLP TV. Of course not the same TV but may be similar. In there is says in the trouble shooting section:

A black screen with the lamp on: Replace the DMD board.

One of the repair guys I spoke to said it was either the digital board or the DMD board. I'm guessing the DMD board is the same as the "digital module" you are referring to?

No not sure what these boards do.

I'm thinking of taking mine to the shop for an estimate. I wonder if we can fix it ourselves if we buy a service manual?
