Problems with USB connections.

I have a Samsung UE48HU7500T and recently have been experiencing an issue with playback through the USB ports. When I plug in either my 500gb external hard drive or my 32gb usb stick I find that when trying to watch any films I have downloaded, at varying times the programme will freeze and then clicks off altogether. I have tried using the hard drive and stick in each of the three USB ports and the same thing happens and with more than one film. Is this fairly common and is it an easy fix please?
