How sure can we be that the problem is only with the crt board? I ask because getting a replacement board wouldn't be out of the question.

Well , let's put it this way...
It's either the board ( I really suspect the IC on that board is the problem.) or what drives it....
Why don't you try & change the IC first...
2 reasons;
#1=It will be cheaper & easier to do....
#2=It should be easier to find the IC online rather than the CRT board...

IF you decide to go the IC route:...
You will need "solder wick" & the number that's on the top of the IC....
Give me (post) the # here & I'll see where you can get it & how much it'll cost....OK....Wink...

Do not remove the IC until I give you info on how to do it...
They go in only one way...

Shouldn't pose a problem removing the IC and putting a new one in. I've done something like that a couple times. Pointers are always welcome though. Ahhh, a desoldering braid? I have a desoldering iron, not the best but it does the job. Would typical 60/40 solder be ok for this? Of course, there would be a honking big resistor right in front of it blocking the screws that attach it to the heatsink. (I have plenty of thermal paste on hand as well!:-)

Here's the part #

Philips TDA6120Q (Video Output Amplifier)

I was a little shocked at how easy it was to find the datasheet for the TDA6120Q. Very informative, some of it I understand, some I don't. It does have a fairly good description of soldering methods. I should be able to find this part locally for $2-$3.

A little suggestion about posting....
No need to click on ""[In reply to] ""....
That copies the whole post into the reply....Not needed....
If you need to refer to the post you are replying to , click on "Reply" instead & just scroll down below the "reply box" (the one you type your reply in) & the post is there for reference....

Maybe , maybe not....Here is a supplier;==>

TDA6120Q - Philips IC 13-pin ZIP MOS Video Output Amplifier *SS
PHILIPS IC 13-PIN ZIP MOS VIDEO OUTPUT AMPLIFIER *SS

That's the same company that has the solder wick...
So if you need the solder wick & can't find it &/or the IC locally you can
order it or both from them & save some cash....
I've done bussiness with MCM in the past & I reccommend them highly....
They are reputable & trustworthy....

Good Luck.....

I either click on 'Quote' or 'Reply', whichever I feel works the best. :-) I never really did care much for web based posting & threading. (SIGH) I really miss newsgroups at times. :-)

The area I live in, Boston-Metrowest, is plentiful with tv repair shops and electronics parts stores. Not counting all the Radio Shacks. I already found a place in my local area that has the IC part in stock for $3.75. If need be, I can get a crt board for $35. I think I'll pick up some of the same type of desoldering braid you mentioned while I'm at it. The desoldering iron I have is somewhat of a pain to use, and the datasheet was specific about the amount of time vs temperature for manual soldering.

It'll be a couple days or so before I'm able to take care of this. In the meantime, Thank You for all your help! I'll post the results when I get some. :-)

Re: [Ron.M] RCA-D52W23 Blue CRT Cuts Out [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey Ron -

Got the IC, took the old one out and put the new one in with no problems. I cleaned the dust out of everything beforehand, with all the panels off the mirror, lenses, and back of the screen got a bit dusty. Plugged everything back in, fired her up, and it's been four hours and the blue crt is working just fine. Tweaked the picture settings a little, and the picture is fantastic.

Thanks! Smile
