RCA Home Theater Dumpster TV F27732SB Can't Post

Hello, I found this RCA "Home Theatre" Model F27732SB TV today by my building's dumpster. It works OK. I notice I can hear faint crackle once in a while if I put my head near the rear vent of the TV. Somtimes ONLY When first I power it on, the screen intermittantly shakes and is unstable but this clears up fairly quickly and then it seems to run stable for hours. My question
* Are their any known problems with this TV and any components I should change before it combusts or to prevent combustion? is this TV a pice of SH*T?
I am using it right now and it is running fine except for the seldom VERY faint crackle that I need to stick my head against the back vent to hear. I'd like to save it if possible. Nice TV. Great Picture.

Bubba

Sorry Chassi number is CTC 169CK5.
Oh and I said crackle.. Not the frequency of a "Crackle" though, crackle sound but slow single faint imremittant ticks but with the tone of a crackle. VERY quiet and you cannot hear it unless you go right up to the TV and put your ear right against the back vent. Can't really smell anything.

Any Help Greatly Appreciated.

Bubba

Franky, thanx but can you be a little more specific? Should I replace ALL the elecrolytic Caps aside from the audio section or can you give me specific elecrolytic Cap numbers (IE C37) for this chassis CTC169CK5. I am a certified technician but not as familar with TV's as I am with radios and amplifiers etc. I do however know how to discharge the tube and keep it shorted while replacing proper polarity caps. The other question is shoud I go say 25% higher than the rated voltages on all new electolytics as I keep hearing that manufacturuers seem to be using below rated voltage components in the elecrolytic cap area.
What is ESR Emergency Service Repair? or Electronic Service Repair?

THX to anyone that can help I really love the picture on this TV and it would be a shame to have this blow up because I was too late replacing as few electrolytic caps as it is working fine.

I did find this from poster "PHIL" in an old topic but want to confirm this is what I am looking for and the same chassis.
Answer
CR4122 - 3 volt zener
Q4101 - SGSIF461
IC4101 - TEA2261
C4102 - 15@50
C4104 - 2.2@100
CR4118 - Diode
C4145 - 1000@50
C4402 - varies with different versions
C4403 - varies with different versions
Q4401 2sd1885

Also make sure to check the solder on CR4001 and CR4004.

These are the the parts I replace on all sets that come in with a DEAD or INTERMITTANT DEAD symptom on all CTC169 chassis.

The ""faint crackling" is usually static discharge in the high voltage section. If there is excessive dust build up in that area. Sometimes just blowing out the dust will solve the problem. I have had several RCAs where dust on the CRT around the anode had accumulated moisture causing this problem and was cured by cleaning out the dust and spaying the area with a clear acrylic spray. Be careful while working in this area or you might get zapped with residual high voltage from the CRT.

Re: [mel] RCA Home Theater Dumpster TV F27732SB [In reply to] Can't Post

Yes VERY faint subtle hardly a crackle (Take a crackle and take single bits and spread them apart once every 5 - 10 seconds or say an extremely slow FAINT crackle) but that is what it sounds like. Funny thing if my moniter for the computer i am using right now, when i put my ear against the top of it also does it but alot more. I just want to make sure I am not confusing it with ordinary characteristics of a CRT when on?
The VERY seldom picture instability (shaking).. What would cause that? Could the 2 things be related?

I vacuumed off the back of the CRT with brush attachment.. and all of the inside yesterday. It is clean as a whistle.

You say you know how to discharge the the crt, do that and clean that area around the hole of the anode and area with a good cleaner and let dry!

I use alcohol because it dries fast, but if you are in no hurry, just use water, but make sure everything is dry before firing up!

Re: [Franky] RCA Home Theater Dumpster TV F27732SB [In reply to] Can't Post

OK so I turned it on today and flat line horizontally right across the entire length of the middle of the screen. About 1/4 or less of an inch high. Does this mean the problem is in the Vertical oscillator? A Cap or IC perhaps?

It then came on fine full screen when I restarted it again but now it is back to flat line. Can anyone point me in which area I should be looking and / or what the likeliest problem and sollution is? Advice?
THX
Should I replace electolytics?

OK I have heard about the bad solder joints on these TV's any specific location to focus like where the vertical deflection circuit may be?

OK I found where this slug like piece (Degaussing Thermistor) goes. Can I simply solder it back on the leads and it should work or do I have to source out a new part?

It is very difficult to solder the leads back on to the "slug". You are beter off to replace it.

Re: [mel] RCA Home Theater Dumpster TV F27732SB [In reply to] Can't Post

OK Well I soldered them back on and so far so good. I guess that thermister must have been detatched. That may have been why I had the jumpy screen I was decribing. It was actually quite easy to solder back in. I was worried when I heated up to solder to the puck that they would come unsoldered from the circuit board (KInd of a dumb component for this) DO they make a better one where the leads aren't soldered to the component?. Anyway it's been SOLID on start up and I have been watching it for a few hours now SOLID with not a flutter..

THANX VERY MUCH TO: MEL, Paul and Franky!!! You guys are great!
I learned alot just from this simple excersize.

The Intermittant Horizontal lines and shaky picture are back. Runs for hours then this once in a while then cleans up. No total vertical collapse and flat Horizontal line like before however. When it does this it sounds like someone is shaking a light bulb and the filaments are jiggling inside the back. Any constructive ideas? When the shaking and fine horizontal lines happen, it sounds like Xmas bells that santa might jingle... :)

Well. The Lines are fine and are HORIZONTAL.. spaced apart but fill the screen top to bottom. The Jitttering (when it happens) makes the piture tremble. Also I can hear that very slow light static noise again coming from the back like water slowly dripping or sizzling but smell nothing burning. The Screen is stable righ now and has been for hours though.

GREAT Idea. Will try that tonight.

Anyone know where I can get/buy the service manual notes for this specific TV? Model F22732SB Chassis CTC169CK5

It would be much easuer with that. Even though this is quite fun!
