RCA XL-100 volume problem

I have an RCA XL-100 model# gkr685hr that was left me by my late father a few years ago. It has been working absolutely great until just this last week. The volume is behaving somewhat illogically. Whether using the remote or the buttons on the front panel, I cannot get the volume to go up or down or mute. It's stuck on one volume level and we can hear it pretty good unless the scene gets quiet. I would have thought the volume would go completely out if there was a problem; not get stuck at one level. Any ideas??
