Coolant problem? Can't Post

I have a Magnavox 55 In. Tv Model #55p8288a and the color is starting to become foggy and the colors are becoming cloudy. Everything I read online says its a coolant problem. I came across a link at tvrepairkits.com where I can get the parts and a instructional step by step. Before I ordered this "kit" I came across this site and spent the better part of 90 minutes reviewing all the posts in relation to my needs. Im in not whatsoever "handy" with my hands but I am a certified computer service tech so Im good working with consumer electronics. What referrals could users lead me to not only get what I need to fix my tv but a tutorial as well for my (type) of tv? The postings I did find on here some pretty informative posts I see great pics and and helpful advice but Im afraid I may get caught up over my head when I crack my tv open.

DaveMN;...

1st off;...
Are you sure that you have a coolant problem ???
Chances are that you DO !!!
IF you would like to verify it , post back here & I'll tell you how you can...
No biggie...
Fairly easy to do...

The instructions that you will get from "tvrepairkits.com" , I'm told are excellent....
Altho a bit pricey for the kit , they are great for inexperienced people like you....
Just curious , how much is the kit for your TV ???
I'd suggest you order the kit with the following understanding with the folks at "tvrepairkits.com" , that if you do NOT use it , can you return it for a FULL refund...
This will give you a chance to see the info you get & if you think you can or can not do it...
IF you decide to use the kit & get hung up at some point & need help , you have 2 options open...
"tvrepairkits.com" has a help line that you can call & they will walk you thru your glitch..
Or you can come back here for help...

BTW:....
I'm having a problem with my computer !!!
Interested ???
Been trying to find & fix it for about 3 weeks...

DaveMN;...

You will have to remove the front screen to confirm & verify a coolant problem..

In the pix above , ignore the red circles...
Underneath the screen is a panel that covers the speakers..
Grab on one side & gently but firmly pull that side off..
Do the same to the other side...
Use care so as to not break the panel...
Along the bottom edge of the screen on the face of the lower section , you should see 3 or 4 screws that hold the screen in place..
They are 1/4" hex head screws..
(On some versions , they are phillips head screws)..
IF you go ahead with the coolant change , I'd suggest you purchase a 1/4" nutdriver with a magnetic end..
You will understand later IF you go ahead..
Remove the screws..
Now , your screen will come off in 1 of 2 ways..
In the pix above , you have the pushbuttons for power , chan up/down & vol up/down in the green circle...
You MUST use care when removing the screen so you do not break that little panel that's on the inside of the screen..
IF YOU BREAK THAT PANEL , YOU ARE DEAD IN THE WATER !!!!
That TV is about 9-10 years old & those panels are NLA..(I think !!!)..
#1;...
Try grabbing the bottom left & right sides of the screen & swing it away from the set 2~4"..
If this is the way that screen comes off , use CARE not to pull it too far as there is not much slack in the wiring going to the pushbutton panel..
Pull it out as far as it will safely go & then lift the screen straight up..
As you do that , turn the screen 90* around & safely stand it up against the TV..
#2...
Try grabbing the bottom left & right sides of the screen & carefully push the screen straight up..
It will only go so far so do not force it..
Then pull the screen away from the TV , again , use CARE not to pull it too far as there is not much slack in the wiring going to the pushbutton panel..
As you do that , turn the screen 90* around & safely stand it up against the TV..

IF your screen is in one piece , hook the TV up to AC power & a video source & turn it on...
Inside the cavity you'll see 3 lens assemblies..
One red , one green & one blue...
You'll need to take a looksee directly into the lens..
USE CARE when you do this as your eyes need to adjust to the possibly bright light that may be coming out thru the lens..
Start with the red CRT..
Take a look at the red CRT screen..
Usually the red coolant does NOT have a problem , so the image on the CRT face should be clear & IN focus...
Then check out the green CRT face..
That one usually will be VERY cloudy & have a piss poor image on the CRT face...
Then look at the blue CRT face...
That one usually is the worst one...
Having fun yet ???

OK , IF the red CRT is clear & the green & blue CRTs are cloudy , you have a coolant problem ...
Please post results when you have a chance..

Happy Thanksgiving..

(I have a neighbor that is a complete jerk !!!
I wished him a Happy thanksgiving by flipping him the bird & telling him to stuff it..Wink..)

Along the bottom edge of the screen on the face of the lower section , you should see 3 or 4 screws that hold the screen in place..

On my particular model there are no screws at all at or near the bottom edge of the screen on the face of the lower section. So I cant move further.

DaveMN;....

That info is 4 years old & right now I don't have the time to check out the methods...
I will do it later & give you my opinion..

Posting a pix here IS EASY !!!
Do NOT let my instructions deter you by their length...
Once you do it , it will become second nature for you in the future..

Here goes;=>..

Here ya go;.....
How do I post pictures?
I'll simplify this.....
1st , take a GOOD pix with your camera....
Upload it (them) to your computer....
Save it as a JPEG......
Save it to your desktop or ???....
Give it a name so you can find it easily....
Go to
http://imageshack.us/ or
http://register.photobucket.com/step1 or flickr or ???
& sign up & join....
They are all FREE to join & use....
I suggest you use imageshack as it is easier....
Upload your pix....
When you upload your pix to imageshack.com use the "Upload Options"
feature....
Click on the drop down arrow where it says "Do not resize".....
Choose 800X600...Skip "Add Label"...(?)....Upload pix...
When posting a pix from imageshack.us do this;...
Select the pix you want to post from "My Images"....
Right click on the image you want to post....
A box with several choices will appear....
Choose "View Image"....
When that window opens , go to the right side where it says;..>
"links to share this image"...
Click on that & click again on "Direct Link" & copy it , paste it
in a new tab to open a new window..
When that page loads up , put your mouse over any part of the pix &
right click to click on "copy"...
Do NOT enlarge the pix...
Come back to the box you are posting in , right click "paste" &
Ta-Da , your pix should pop up full sized & clear as it was taken...
Before you post the pix in the thread , go to the "Preview Post"
button at the bottom center where you are making your post & click
on that one time....
Wait for it to load the post...
Scroll up & check your post & pix...
If the pix is too small or too big , go back to imageshack
(or photobucket) & make the needed adjustments....
PLEASE DON"T post pix we need an IMAX monitor to view....
If you need any further help or info , just post....

PLEASE give me GOOD , CLEAR & IN FOCUS pix...
Would like to see the bottom edge of the screen...

THANKS...Smile...

No , not really...
Photobucket is OK , but , I found that in my case imageshack is easier to use....

In the pix above , are there any kind of tabs (Red arrows) that you can pull down to release the screen ???..

If not , can you post a close-up pix of one of those tabs ???
About a 45 degree angle looking upward..
Thanks..

Gotcha. Need need though. For this particular model you dont do anything with the bottom area, you gently but firmly take the frame off from around the screen. Did that and there are the screws. Need to take those off next. Let you know what I find out.

DaveMN;...

Well, that's one I forgot about...
GOOD JOB !!!!

When you get the screen off , you may see a healthy layer of dust accumulated on each of the lenses...
To clean them off , use WINDEX or a non-abrasive glass cleaner & a soft clean "T" shirt or a clean diaper...
Spray the cleaner on THE "T" shirt & NOT the lenses..
That alone should make a difference in the pix quality..

DaveMN;..

Looks like time to change the coolant...
You will get only enough coolant for 2 CRTs...
Reason is that you do NOT need to change the Red CRT coolant...
ONLY the Green & Blue are changed...
The Red CRT coolant hardly ever goes bad...
When you order & get the kit , do NOT start until I give you some info....
PLEASE post back here when you get the kit & I'll give you the next step...
THANKS...Sly...

Yes , it IS work...
But , you'll save a LOT of money doing it yourself & you'll have a GREAT pix when you do it right ...

THANKS for the link & PW for the instructions..

That is kind of a "generic" method for Magnavox/Philips TVs..
There are some differences that I would like to suggest to you to make things go better..
When you are ready to jump in & start this , post a day ahead & I'll give you the changes step by step to make regarding the procedure they gave you...
Examples are;...
You disconnect & take out ONLY 1 CRT at a time...
Will explain when the time comes..
Cleaning the lens assembly will be different & EASIER !!...
Will also explain when the time comes..
I will need a pix (NOT HUGE) of the CRT lens assembly...

DaveMN;....

I will need a couple of days to compile a lengthy info sheet to the instructions you got...
I need to put pix , etc , in the file & somehow make it available to you...
I'm not sure I will be able to post it here in the thread as I anticipate limitations..

Also , you will need the following;=>..
1)..
A 1/4" nutdriver WITH a MAGNETIC end...
Xcelite has one that you should be able to get a any decent electronic supply store...
RadioShack excluded..
It IS VITAL the nutdriver have a MAGNETIC end...
Will explain later...

2)..
A small bottle of Windex Glass cleaner or similar NON-Abrasive glass cleaner..

3)..
A SOFT CLEAN cotton "T" shirt OR a SOFT CLEAN cotton diaper..

Since the lenses are made from acrylic plastic , paper towels are NOT recommended !!!

EDIT:
PS;..
You'll need a black felt tip marker...

I'm not in the slightest bit envious...

Sunday , it was 81 wunnerful degrees here...Smile..
I wish you all the best..

When you are ready for the TV , you'll need about 1 1/2~3 hours to do this job...
I need to know what time zone you live in...

Here's the plan;...
I intend to be online while you are doing this...
Reason is that I'm going to give you 1/2 of the steps & then you STOP ...
I need pix of the 1st (Blue) CRT when it is out of the TV...
I need to see what the lens assembly looks like to give you proper instructions how to disassemble that to clean the lenses & CRT face , etc.
That way you should be able to do it all at one shot instead of a 2 day affair..
