Samsung HPT4254 Plasma Lightning no sound Can't Post

Hey guys need help. I have a 42" Samsung Plasma HPT4254X, after a severe lightning storm the sound quit working on my TV. I checked the manual and checked the connections to both the main board and the SMPB and neither shown signs of being burned or fried. The TV still does the samsung chime whenever it turns on so I know that at least one of the speakers is still good. the picture is still fine too. I wasn't sure if one of you could tell me with the lightning situation if it would likely be a bad main board or the SMPB. For a temporary fix, I was just going to plug in my sound bar into the digital audio output, and this doesn't work either. I have a voltage tester but cannot see what the pins are supposed to read in the manual voltage wise. I am not sure what step to take next. Any Samsung experts out there? I have tried all 3 HDMI inputs and they al have the same result, picture is good, but no sound.

Just a quick unexperienced thought.....
Have you gone into the menu & checked your audio functions ???
See if the speakers are turned on , auxiliary audio turned on , etc...
Since the chime is working , seems to me that a function has been spiked by the storm & hopefully can be reset...

Perhaps 74f100 , jts1957 or mel can help you further...

A word to the wise;=>...
Next time a storm of any size that has potential for lightning , I recommend you unplug TVs , computers , etc , anything that can be damaged by a strike...

GOOD LUCK....Sly....

Thanks Ron, I tried the audio fucntions and all are normal, as of last night the "chime" stopped working, so I am not sure what is going on. The manual narrows it down to either the main board where all of the inputs are, or the "SMPB" board where the power is landed. I was going to try the main board first, and if it didnt work, I would probably just cut my losses with it, I really dont want to put that much money into a TV that is probably on its last leg anyway since it was made in 2007. I have always bragged on this TV for being such a trooper, guess I should have knocked on some wood!

They were STILL using that? I thought everything is made of plastic and composites now-a-days

rnash117;.....

All the knowledge I have about Plasma TVs wouldn't fill a thimble !!!...Wink....
That said , heres my last bit of trial & error...
You will need an empty flash drive & be able to follow detailed step by step instructions...
On the TV you should find a USB port...
This is where you will load the updated file into the TV..
This is NOT a complicated deal...
I am suspecting a corrupted file due to a possible lightning spike...
This is simple & hopefully will correct the file if it is corrupted...
This in NO way will cause ANY additional corruption to your file as it is now...
It's worth a shot...
Go here;=>....
http://www.samsung.com/...PT4254X/XAA#content2

Scroll down & select "Manuals & Downloads"...
Click on "Firmware"...
Download the top file "Upgrade File (Firmware) It is a 12.67 MB file....
Then download "Upgrade Guide (Firmware)(ver.1.0)" for the instructions how to install the new upgrade...

BTW:....
A 5 year old TV should have a considerable amount of life left , even if it's a Plasma TV....Wink...

Please post results....THANKS....Smile....Smile...

Are the other inputs working?

If you are getting the startup sound, then the audio output circuits are working.

If it is only HDMI, then the HDMI processor is probably bad. But they usually short, which will shut the set down.

Either way, the main is the only part avail. to repair this. Just do an ohm check across the speakers to make sure they haven't shorted.

Just to bring you up to speed on this one;=>...

He said;=>....

as of last night the "chime" stopped working

So it appears that the audio circuits are/were working....

And then he said;=>....

So that answers this (I think !!!);=>...

Not to start an arguement with a tech much more experienced than I , buttttt...

Not likely since the chimes were working....

Jim , I reallly would like to see the results of the new file update installation...
IF he intends to do it....

Have a GREAT day & weekend....Sly....

Sorry Ron, I wasn't trying to discount what you've already said.

I was in a hurry earlier, and was just trying to put some ideas out to check. I didn't have time to stop and read the whole thread at that time.

My main question is if the other (non) HDMI ports are working. This set (I believe) has a separate HDMI processor.

You've given him step one, I simply wanted to get the next few out if necessary.

I meant no disrespect towards you or the OP.

Good luck,
Jim

74f100;....

NO disrespect or offense taken... Everything's cool....Wink....

What I could not wrap my head around was that you said;=>..
""If you are getting the startup sound, then the audio output circuits are working""". (Which we agree he was & they are..)....
Then you said;=>....
"""Just do an ohm check across the speakers to make sure they haven't shorted""".
That's when I said (To myself..) Whaaaaa ????
Now I know you are a good tech...
So I'm thinking you went off your meds or doubled up on the doses...Wink..
Or it was the mushrooms that caused it....Wink...
Either way , no harm , no foul...

ANY further assistance you offer IS welcome !!!!...

Have a GREAT day & weekend....

Re: [Ron.M] Samsung HPT4254 Plasma Lightning no sound [In reply to] Can't Post

LOL,,,, I didn't stop and read all of his original post. So I wasn't sure if he had the startup sound or not,,,I covered the checks for either case..

BTW,,,, yes, with no audio you should ohm check the speakers. I've had 3 sets of TV speakers shorted in the last year. Most will be 8 ohms,,,,if an 8 ohm speaker reads 0, then it will blow the audio amp if the main is replaced.
