Samsung LED no picture, yes sound UN50EH5000FXZA Can't Post

I have a Samsung 50" LED TV model UN50EH5000FXZA which, at 14 months (out of warranty) has stopped displaying picture. Sound is still on, inputs are good (will read from cable box, Bluray player, etc.). No backlights but I've done the "flashlight test" and I do see menus. Checking various repair sites indicates to me this is likely to be T-con board, possibly the main board.

OK, I open up the back of the TV and I appear to have only two boards - what?! Main board and Power supply/LED board.

Before ordering either or both of those boards to replace, I want to make sure there isn't a third board (separate T-con board) hiding under the TV stand (would Samsung actually manufacture a TV with a board hidden that way?) - frankly, I don't even know how to remove the big black plastic framework which connects the TV stand.

You can see the open back of my TV here:

Any help is appreciated - thank you!

Follow the flat black cable from the Main board to the Tcon board.

So YES, Samsung put a board *under* the TV stand attachment?! wow-- I'll try it; maybe it's not as daunting to take apart as it looks! thanks--

First unplug CN803 on power supply and see if the LEDs light. If yes, plug back in and obtain CN803 voltages (with TV OFF & TV ON assuming you have control of set).

You're now getting into territory beyond me (I'm a real "end user", just one who's willing to open up the back and take a look because I'm disgusted at the thought that the lifespan of this TV is so short & I don't have the $$ to just replace the TV).

So I don't have the ability to check voltages and no special electronics equipment; I figured I could switch out boards but I won't be doing anything which requires soldering, etc. :/

You've said you can change inputs and see the OSD with an external light. DOES the set turn On & Off at your command?

Unplug CN803 on the left edge of the power supply board and see if the LCD panel lights up.

If it does NOT light up your defect will be either on the power supply board or in the panel itself.

Testing voltages just requires a DVM on DC volts and back-probing connector where the wire enters the plastic.

Edit: The fact that you can see an OSD would tend to eliminate the Tcon board as a suspect.

Yes, I've had the ability to turn the TV on & off with my remote control (either the TV's remote or the cable box remote, programmed for the TV).

OSD = On Screen Dialog? Data?

It's an LED television, so I don't have an LCD panel - or, if I do, I don't know what it is :/ I take it the CN803 is cable of some sort - is it the ribbon cable or a different one? Sorry, we are talking ignorance here! I've never built a computer, etc., just websites!

"LED TV is a bit of a misnomer but as manufacturers and retailers continue to use the term, it makes it's way into the public conscience and is worth deliberating on the differences. LED televisions are really just LCD televisions that use LED lights for back lighting instead of the flourescent CFL lighting traditionally used for LCDs. Both employ the liquid crystal diode (LCD) technology front panel containing the “twisting crystals” which define LCD technology."

CN803, a 14 pin connector, is in the left upper corner of your Power /LED driver board, along the LEFT edge, (Board on the right in your photo).

Thank you for several points of clarification - that's very helpful. Tomorrow in the daylight I will check more of these things out.

I also found at least part of a repair manual for my TV online and it looks like *there really is* a T-con board hidden under the stand (!!!)

Ok, in order to see if the LCD panel lights up (and by this you mean the screen itself, yes?) I will obviously need to plug it back in (!!) and take its face off the guest bed where it currently resides (while I took the back off).

Is this pretty obviously (the lighting up) and will it remain lit-up or does it happen quickly and disappear?

My inclination, in my ignorance but having a healthy respect for the power of electricity, is to unplug the CN803 cable and *then* plug the TV back in, rather than have the TV plugged in and then unplugging the cable.

Is that a reasonable approach?

Since you think it's unlikely the Tcon board is at fault, I won't unscrew the entire back/sides of the TV set unless I need to. I can access the power-supply board and the main board quite easily with just that first back-access panel removed.

"Edit: The fact that you can see an OSD would tend to eliminate the Tcon board as a suspect."

thank you for your time and patience!

Re: [Lynnsky] Samsung LED no picture, yes sound UN50EH5000FXZA [In reply to] Can't Post

I recently (4/7/15) completed repairs to a "Dead" 40" version of this set. The first thing I noted was a puffed (47ufd 200 volt) electrolytic capacitor on the Power board at location number CM842 (Replacing it did NOT make a bit of difference). I found The Fast track guide and Training manual online and a EH5300 series SM. Unfortunately NONE have Schematics, but was able to glean how Main and PSB give and receive some commands. I noticed on a pay forum that for a similar set (previous model or next in line, I don't recall) unplugging the CN803 would allow LEDs in the panel to light (if they or their power source are NOT defective). Good enough to at least prove the LEDs are OK and that the screen isn't cracked.

The back of the panel has many openings and points where light from the LED strips will leak through. You will be looking to see if screen lights AND stays lit. You will NOT get a picture or sound because the A5V & B5V AND B13V volts from the PSB will NOT be reaching the Main Board with the connector unplugged.
Leaving the set face down on a flat table large enough to support the set while resting on its 'frame' (NOT the screen itself) with the stand removed is how I tackled.

On my customers set turns out that remote receiver and joystick were NOT getting b-plus (A3.3V). Main WAS putting out a power on and BL on as soon as TV was plugged in and DIMM was zero volts. Putting my own 0.5 to 4 volts did allow backlights to adjust. Most, but not all secondary power sources on the Main were present but trying to supply my own A3.3V wasn't working. Ordering and replacing the Main board solved his problem. SJ $40 board

Careful with the joystick connector.
