Samsung Plasma TV Repair Help.. Can't Post

Hi guys I have a Samsung 42 Inch Plasma tv Model:PS42A457P1D which I have had since 2008 however it has recently stopped turning on.

For any of you into this sort of thing you will probably of heard that Samsung Plasma screens from around this year suffered manufacturing issues with the on board power supply more specifically a few capacitors.

Moving on I have removed the rear cover which to no surprise shows the offending bulging capacitors on the power board pictured below.

Now I understand the capacitors are only a few £ and it is apparently as simple as de soldering the old ones and soldering in the new ones however I'm just looking for some clarification...

Am I ok to remove the power board and de solder these capacitors or are some parts still live I don't fancy an electric shock.

The TV has not been plugged in for over 24 hours.

Remove board plugs.
Remove board screws.
Remove board and set foil side up.
Take a wide bladed screwdriver or a putty knife and short between the pins of the three largest capacitors - if no visible sparks when doing so, you're good to go swapping out bad caps.
Observe orientation so that the replacements are mounted with correct polarity.

When you say short the pins do you mean just cross the legs on the soldered side.

I understand but I'm getting mixed comments about this some posters are saying not to short the capacitors with a screw driver as they can explode.

Loud noise and brief flash - along with pitting of the screwdriver blade = the capacitor WAS holding a charge. IF you don't want the fireworks use a 5 to 10 watt resistor in the mid hundreds to low thousands of ohms instead of blades.

I see.

I'm told they should have any charge after the tv being unplugged for 24 hours does that sound right?

^last question I promise...

Depends on what else is in the circuit with the cap.

Sir, If you are that concerned with the low voltage and minimal current, I would suggest you have someone else check and or change them. If you are not sure as to the condition of a cap you remove, replace it.

Good Luck

Fixed this last week it was just the three dodgy capacitors I bought 3 new ones from Maplin for a total of £1.23 and soldered them in.

Thanks for your assistance gents.
