Samsung TV keeps changing speaker setting to TV speakers

When trying to "repair" a white spot on the screen of our Samsung Smart TV, I did a full factory reset, pressing the power button for 30 seconds and then leaving the set unplugged for 30 minutes. This didn't help (it is a hardware problem with the reflector lights, and I'm told it will cost as much to repair as to buy a new set). But since that reset, there's now a problem with the sound setting.
We have an external sound bar that has been working fine for years, and the TV's speaker setting has been set to "Receiver". Now, if we choose that speaker setting, it works OK when the source is AV (USB ports), but any time we switch to HDMI source (the cable TV box input), the set changes speaker setting to the TV speakers. Very mysterious! What can we do, short of giving up and buying a new TV?
