Samsung TV sync problems

I have a Samsung LN46A550P3F tv. When I turn it on it cannot sync with the input signal and automatically turns off and tries again. When it first started it would usually turn itself on/off a couple of times before it synced. Now it can take over 30 minutes and is getting progressively worse. I have it hooked to the HDMI input now but have tried it on the RGB inputs as well and it has the same issue. Unplugged for a couple of hours, reset to factory settings etc. was no help. Once it finally syncs up it works flawlessly.
I don't want to spend a lot of money on it since it is several years old but I think I am willing to gamble a few bucks on a new power or main board from ebay etc. if I thought it had decent odds of working.
Does anyone have an educated guess as to what the likely culprit is?
