Samsung UN46D6050TFXZA turns itself off 30 seconds after start

The TV turns on fine. TV started turning off on its own about 30 seconds after I power it on a couple of days ago. I have turned it on from the remote and from the front panel and see no difference in behaviour.
I have been able to turn it on multiple times and change channels and volume. The picture is good. The set just doesn't want to stay on.
Based on info I found online, I have tried a soft reset (unplugged the TV for as much as 5 minutes, more than once), changed the power cord from a surge protector to the wall outlet directly, and, although I had never configured them or used them since I bought the TV, I made sure eco, sleep time and anynet+ were all turned off, all without any change. I was able to make those menu changes in multiple attempts because of the limited on-time. The TV continues to turn off after 30 seconds.
Wanted to do a factory reset, but that option does not appear in my menus as suggested online.
I don't believe the firmware has ever been upgraded and now the TV won't stay on long enough to even attempt it.
