Samsung crt tv will not turn on. Can't Post

Hello everyone. I've a samsung TX-S3082WH. It won't turn on, the led light isn't on either. I can hear a ticking sound coming from the board. I read this ticking is the board going into protection mode, and that I might have a bad IC. I have a DMM I could use to test components, but am not sure where to begin. I would be eternally greatful for anyone who could help me

Oops, I mean a bad horizontal output transistor, not IC. I also checked the board for bulging capacitors, and found none. Can anyone help me with this?

Check the resistance of collector to emitter and emitter to collector of the horizontal output transistor and post readings.

There's two transistors on a heat sink located near the flyback. I checked the resistance for both of these.

It's 0 ohms across the board. Does this mean they are shorted out?

Either one of you happen to have the chassis number?

I looked around the inside for any visible signs of damage. on the circuit board it looks like solder melted through the board in some parts, including a path that leads to the horizontal output transistor. Check it out let me know what you think:

Also cracks around the outside of the screen....

Solder is normal.

What I meant was, there's this putty insulating stuff around the edges and back of the screen... you can see it in the pictures...it's cracked. I'm not sure if that affects the function of the TV, just looking at it though makes me think it's damaged possibly due to heat

Brown epoxy on the ?YOKE? being cracked should present no problem at this time. Smile

I don't have much info on this model but the HOT is the transistor on the heat sync facing the back by the flyback. Read the resistance between the middle and left pins the reverse the leads. You should read infinite in one direction and less in the other. If it shows a short, replace it.

Re: [mel] Samsung crt tv will not turn on. [In reply to] Can't Post

I desoldered the collector pin on the HOT from the board, plugged the TV in, and the LED light on the front of the TV came on. I then hit the power button, and the LED blinked once and nothing else happened.

I then desoldered the HOT completely and checked resistance between the emitter and collector and vice versa, yep it's shorted.

Obviously the HOT needs to be replaced. Does anyone also think I might have a bad flyback transformer too?

If driver transformer and flyback joints are soldered well and the new transistor immediately shorts again ... possibly.

Thanks for the help. I've decided to scrap the TV.
I read that you can test for a bad flyback by desoldering the collector pin on the HOT, and if you get no video and good audio, then you have a bad flyback. The HOT, flyback, and ICs are common problems in Samsung CRT tvs, so I might have a bad ic too. I estimated the cost for all 3 to be about $75 or more, assuming I can even track down the right parts.
Not worth it for such an outdated tv.

Isn't it worth spending a few bucks on a new HOT on the probability that that is your only problem?

Well thanks for setting me straight Ron. The source I read that from sounded like he knew what he was talking about, but I guess you can't believe everything you read. I want to study electronics engineering at my local community college so I can know these things for sure for myself.

And Mel, I think I will try that after all. I found one on ebay for $5... It's a fairchild J6920A

SykoMiko;.....

1st off;.....
Did you get that number off the transistor or did you cross it ???
2nd;....
NEVER , EVER , NEVVVEEERRR order ANYTHING from an eBay seller that is in CHINA !!!!!
ALWAYS read where the item ships from !!!!
Note the location & warranty from this seller;=>...

Quote
Item location: china, China
14 days money back, buyer pays return shipping ...

I see all kinds of problems getting that transistor from that seller....
Delivery time will take 10 days to 2 weeks...
(Estimated between Mon. Jun. 18 and Mon. Jun. 25)
Is it really going to be worth return shipping costs if you need to send it back ???...NO!!!!...So you'll eat it...

IF J6920A is not the original number , please post the number on the transistor & let us go to work & find you a replacement....THANKS...Smile....

Not sure what you mean by "cross" it, but yeah the number came straight from the transistor. I uploaded a picture of it on imageshack... from top left to bottom right it reads:

(d) (4)
F
J6920A
G03
http://imageshack.us/...554146080100927.jpg/

I couldn't find it anywhere else on the web except ebay. Hope this info helps

It crosses to an NTE2665 which you should be able to buy locally.

I found the datasheets for both transistors

NTE2665 http://www.alldatasheet.com/...155/NTE/NTE2665.html

And my Fairchild J6920A is actually FJL6920 http://www.fairchildsemi.com/ds/FJ/FJL6920.pdf

I noticed the specs are similar, but do not match 100%

It DOES cross reference even with the FJL. Go to the NTE Electronics website to check it out.
I used NTEs for years with no problems.

ok great. I'll see if I can pick up one of these from Radio Shack tomorrow...Besides the web or radio shack, do you know where I could pick up one of these? I'm almost certain Wal mart does not stock transistorsWink and i'm not sure where else I could find them
