Samsung un60es7500 LED backlight problem - need advice

Hey folks,
I have a samsung un60es7500 that demonstrates illumination only on the top half of the screen ... the bottom half is darker
I'm no TV repair expert but I'm handy and, after watching some youtube videos on LED backlight replacement, I thought I'd try a repair.
I assumed it would have horizontal LED backlight strips and that the bottom strips had a problem... but when I took it apart, I was surprised to see it has only *two vertical* backlight strips, one on the left and right edges.
I plugged it in and, indeed, only the top half of each strip is illuminating.
It seems hard to believe both strips have defective LEDs in the exact same location... is this a control board problem? I don't want to buy new LED backlight strips if I don't need them.
