Sharp LE650U with one white spot (toothpaste fix?!)

I've got a Sharp 70" LE650U with a white spot that's roughly 1/8" in size. It's most visible when the screen is pure white. Based on what I've read over at AVSforum, it's a known glitch with these screens. Someone there posted a video on YouTube that shows a technician "buff out" the defect in the surface with toothpaste (!). Video is here:

Has anyone ever done or even heard of this? I've never done a TV repair, so I'm also wondering about the best place to access a factory repair manual so I know exactly how to dismantle.
